I was recently conducting a daylighting study for a building and came across a perplexing issue- a fully enclosed room (no windows) showed measurable levels of daylighting and with some level of glare. I asked a co-worker, who recommended that I change the material. Voila! The room now shows correctly as having no daylight.

 

I checked the material and it was fully opaque. Not sure why it was letting daylight through.

 

Is there some analytic material parameter that I'm missing?

Probably a self-illumination property on some material in the room.  Renderers often do this to fake a lighted room (and to give me no end of consternation!).  It could be just a minor material, and it throws off the lighting calcs completely.

 

My usual process before running a simulation (all of this is in the Best Practices doc in https://forums.autodesk.com/t5/lighting-solar-analysis-forum/lighting-workflows-tips-amp-tricks/td-p...) is review ALL materials in the model (or filter for 'in use' materials in the Materials Editor) for:

  • Appearance property of Self-Illumination, and remove it if it's checked.
  • Generic Appearance material with property of Transparency, and if it's not a very minor material change it to Glass or Glazing with the proper RGB for transparency %
  • Set all the materials Graphics tab to 'Use Render Appearance' so you can see WYSIWIG in the Revit window about what the materials actually will look like to the renderer.
