Does anybody know if it's possible to export part or assembly to XML in Inventor 2009?
My company is now working with PDM tools and we tried to handle 3D-model with XML. We are using Inventor 2008 now and we couldn't get answer from our Autodesk dealer for this.

Are you referring to Dassault Systems 3DXML? XML in itself
is just a markup language specification. If not 3dxml, perhaps
you are referring to XGL instead?

I don't know about 3DXML, but the PDM company (Pricedex) is trying to develop API to put whole modeling file to PDM database using generic XML as a metadata. Probably they want to handle the data for graphic interface for XGL or something.

I searched this board with 'XML' and found it's very time-consuming job to convert Inventor assembly data to XML.
If it is so, it's over the budget issue, and I can talk to my manager not to think about XML. We originally planed to use excel export/import file as interface format with PDM system for part & assembly(BOM) information not for whole modeling data.

Thanks Bob.

Inventor does not support writing a model to an xml file. As Bob said, XML
is just a standard for structuring a text file. It doesn't define the
structure itself. The biggest problem would be defining the structure
itself. Obviously it would be easiest to use something someone else has
already defined. It would be up to you to query the Inventor data and write
out the equivalent XML in the format of your choice.

Brian,

My company decided to go with Excel export/import.

Thanks for your advice.
