Visual Studio Versions

Hi All,

Is there a limit to which version of visual studio I can use with Inventor?

For instance right now we are using Inventor 2013 but we are planning on upgrading soon. That said IT tell me that we only have license for visual studio 2010. So if we upgrade to newest version of Inventor will I have any issues using VS 2010? If so what is the newest version of Inventor I'll be able to upgrade to?

Conversely if we upgrade to the latest version of VS will it work with older versions of Inventor?

Personally I have not experienced any issues with any release of either software, but IT is insisting that I double check to make sure.

Hi @meck,

Inventor 2015 is built with Visual studio 2012 and target .Net 4.5. Inventor 2015 and higher versions supports Visual studio 2012 and higher versions.

I'm using VS 2017 Community with Inventor 2017 and 2018.

If you use addin Wizard, you may need to use VS 2015 or below.  Since the installer won't recognize VS 2017.

Otherwise it doesn't matter which version of VS you're using.

I've just recompiled all my addins to .net 4.7.1.

Actually, Inventor 2020 is built with Visual studio 2017. Having said that the addin created by Visual studio 2019 may be supported for Inventor 2018 - 2020. But, there is no guarantee that Visual Studio 2019 should be supported for Inventor 2018 - 2020.

In general, a newer Visual Studio always supports lower .Net Framework and Platform Toolset. If Visual Studio 2019 supports the lower .Net Frameworks and Platform Toolset. I think, it should be fine to use it for Inventor 2018-2020.
