Excel parameter link breaks if edited while part is open

Hi,

I am trying to use excel to control parameters of multiple parts within an assembly. When the parameters in the excel document are changed, the link breaks for the assembly and all parts. it works fine as long as the parts and assembly are closed before changing a value

is there a way to allow edits to be made while the parts are open without breaking the link? i have attached an example of the larger assembly.

Thanks,

Alan.

Hi @tyler.duttonT8EDE.  Dealing with parameters in your models that are linked to an external Excel file can be challenging at first.  Here is a bit of a order of operations of how that process works, after it is set-up.

  1. change parameter values in the Excel file
    1. Doesn't matter if the model file(s) are open or not at this point
  2. save the excel file
    1. If you don't to this, it's like not clicking Apply or OK after changes in a Form or dialog box.
  3. open the file if it is not already open.
  4. update and/or rebuild the model file
    1. (if you don't do this, you likely won't see the updated parameter values or their effects.

The process pretty much won't work in any other order, and the parameters can't be changed from the model side, so the model can't push any parameter values back to the excel file.  I hope this helps.

I don't think I described the issue very well,

when I change a parameter in excel and save the document, the link immediately breaks for the assembly and parts, the parameter name turns yellow and stops updating.

the option to update the model does not appear, the link just does not work anymore until I relink the excel document.

It does work when the model is closed but it makes testing time consuming and I don't believe it is intended behavior.
