Controlling the qty in the BOM

Hello All,

I have an assembly that consists of around a dozen parts. Lets say I have three of the same parts in this assembly. Is there a way for the qty of 3 in the BOM change to 2 when I suppress one of the parts. I have researched LOD and found out that isn't the way to go and same for design views. If anyone is utilizing any type of  method at this time can you please help put me on the right path. Not sure if a code would necessary or not.

The only way that I can think of off hand is to set the bom structure to reference in the assembly and then also turn off the visibility to make it not show up in the bom as a counted item and also to not show @ drawing level.
