can my assembly determine what ipart to use

I'm wondering if it is possible to have my assembly determine what parts to pull from my iparts.

We design light fixtures. One of our fixtures is very modular and can be configured in many different ways.

Imagine a cube made up of 6 pieces of sheet metal that are held together at each corner. To make our fixture larger we add more cubes by mating two faces together. To connect the cube's faces to each other we need those faces to have a hole in the middle. This would be easy if it was just a couple of cubes but it isn't. Some of our fixture have more than 20 cubes, each cube has 30 variations based on where it sits in the fixture, if it has a bulb in it, if wires pass through it and so on..

I'm wondering if there is a way to have Inventor determine which sub assembly to use based on a rough assembly of cubes.

Please let me know if my example is hard to follow. From what I found online, I feel like using iParts might help me. Am I on the right track or is there a magic hidden feature in inventor that I can use.

Thanks in advance!
