Stress Classification Plots Along Meridional Axes

Hi,

Is there a way to classify or extract stresses along the meridional direction within the Nastran Inventor 2018 environment? This is pertinent to classifying stresses as local or general primary membrane. The vessel is for 100 psi with 1 m dia. I tried splitting the geometry to create meridional entities. However, I get the "Geometry not applied at a valid FE mesh location" error for several parts of the model, even after redefining all loads, idealizations and constraints.

Thank you!

Hi @darrenlovesmusic

Splitting the model is the way to do it, but it sounds like something went wrong when you split the model. Is it possible that some sliver faces were created by the split? If such surfaces do not get mesh but have a load applied to them, that would give the warnings about "Geometry not applied at a valid FE mesh location". (Just ignore the warning and continue with the analysis. It either is not important, or the results will show why it is a problem, such as a hole opening in the vessel.)

@John_Holtz  Thank you, I had to run the analysis with a split model. I was hoping that there would be a provision to pass a surface or take a cut plane and view the stresses along a defined path.

Sorry, I got sidetracked by the issue of "geometry not available" or whatever the message was, and I did not answer the real question!

You can use the XY Plot to graph the results along an edge (which is why you need to split the model.)

  1. XY Plot.
  2. "Element". (Stress results are given at element locations.)
  3. "Along Selected Entity" and select the edge of the split.
  4. Choose the result to plot.
  5. "Show XY Plot".
