Material Orientations in Solid Elements

Hi,

I am using Nastran In-Cad 2017 in Solidworks 2016. I am trying to define orthotropic 3D Balsa wood as my material in a solid element. I have a couple questions

1) When defining orthotropic 3D Materials properties, there are E1,E2,and E3, which apparently refer to Young’s modulus for the longitudinal, lateral and thickness directions (here). How do these 1,2,3 axes relate to XYZ coordinate when we define Solid Elements to a part in an assembly? I think it is, X is 1, Y is 2, and Z is 3?

2) If I want to define orthotropic 3D Materials properties to a curved object (not rectangular) using Solid Elements, is there a way to make my major material axis normal to the surface as it curves? One way I can think of is to make an assembly using multiple parts and defining the material orientation using different coordinate systems but that way is rather tedious and it makes the material definition non-continuous. I am looking for something like Material Orientation function in Shell Elements (here).

Thank you,

Jing

Hello,

1) The directions of the solid orthotropic material are based on the coordinate system selected for the "Material Axes" of the Idealization.

2) There isn't a way to do this besides using multiple coordinate systems.
