FEA Workstation

Need some advice and guidance from experienced Finite Element "Analysers"

 

I'm about to put together a Workstation exclusively for FEA.  Starting with the CPU of course, and then building around that.  Policy limits me to Intel product, so here is my choices.

i9 10980XE

Xeon Gold 6244

Xeon W-3175X....my favorite at the moment.  Question, will Nastran use all 56 threads.

 

Any comments/opinion dearly appreciated.

Hi @sakkie.coetzee, I think it depends on which kind on FE analysis you perform.

I'm not sure, but I remember tha linear analysis does not use multiple CPUs.

Maybe someone of the Autodesk team can confirm it.

On RAM configuration, I suggest you at least 32Gb or better 64Gb.

@darrenlovesmusic ,  thanks for the article.  It talk to RAM really, but still informative.

 

The FEAs that I'll be running is rather complex, with some serious material deformation.  Deformation to the point that in real life the material often tears. 5-6million elements is not unknown.  Punch and Die setup with material being reformed between the two.  "Deep Draw" for those who are familiar with the term. Material thickness reduction to well below 100 micron.

 

Still want to find out how Nastran InCAD use the processor(s)

I'd recommend sub modelling, incase that's possible.
