VR support for Inventor

I have seen, this idea posted in here, but I wanted to give my point of view my idea of CAD+VR setup. 

At the moment VR is just launching at the consumer level, and the hardware that is good enough is here. 

I think that fusion 360 and Inventor both should have VR intergration, because it opens up new ways to work and collaborate 

At the moment the best hardware to start implementing would be HTC Vive, and later Oculus Rift. 
why? 

 

Because roomscale and motion controllers. 

For example look at the program called tilt brush, and if any chance try it.

VR for the abilty to get sense of scale of the things you are modeling.

Motion controllers for modeling and interacting with parts.

Roomscale for walking around your model.

 

at the moment game engines like Unreal Engine 4 and Unity will have VR editor

and valve had awesome collection of demos, called the lab, and one of them is Human Body Scan where you can view 3D model of skeleton and the feeling i got, is the ability to slice the scan and look inside, and this would be awesome to to with inventor assembles, the function to do that in inventor is there.

Why not focus on implementing this feature as soon as possible. There is no debate that this is the future of CAD modeling.

The sooner this is implemented the more experience compared to the competition.


The biggest advantage I see is space awareness between Components, which will improve the ergonomics of the products.

There are many others, but this is what I need the most in my current work.

 

Yes I have a HTC Vive private. Waiting for a good reason to make it part of my job.

HTC Vive is a fantastiskt toy, but is probably a much better tool.

 

VR can almost be considered as a form of 3D printing on speed dial.

There has been unprecedented growth of the augmented & virtual reality market since the early 2015's. Products such as the HTC Vive and Microsoft's Hololens are pioneering the industry of interactive AR & VR, and its only a matter of time before these products become mainstream. 

 

If Autodesk gets in on the ground floor by incorporating some of their many 3-Dimensional design programs, such as Inventor, into the previously mentioned products' software, the possibilities would be endless. Imagine designing a tower on your dining room table using nothing but your hands, or editing the shape of a lamp on the nightstand where it will eventually sit.

"Cool" isn't always practical.  You can do a test right now with no VR hardware.  Hold your hands out as they would be for gesture recognition hardware.  Now keep them there, working, for about 20 - 30 minutes.  You'll find your arms quickly tired; there's practical reasons why we have keyboards and mice (3D or otherwise).

 

As for the graph... meh.  One of my favorite phrases applies: are you measuring what you *think* you are measuring?  In this case that is the number of internet searches per Google, which has little to do with anticipated growth in engineering use.  I'll bet a good chunk of those searches are along the lines of "Find a 3D theater close to ____" and "How much is a 3D TV?".

I'll admit viewing designs in a virtual environment would be really nice. Working on designs in a virtual environment not so much. I'm keen to watch where VR tech goes in the years to come but I do not see it making a large impact outside of entertainment for some time.

Hi,

VR tech is awesome. We are currently testing a workflow to demo our work to customers in a VR environment once the 3D model is completed.

 

While this is a great tools for presentation I can't see it working well for the working environment. You would need to have AR rather than VR at the very least.

 

I played a game recently in VR, but the game still required some input from the keyboard and mouse. Try using the keyboard and mouse when you can't see them. In gaming the difficulty is in getting a workable user interface, which is difficult when you have no practical controls.

Imagine trying to work all the inventor commands simply by looking at them.

 

Now AR on the other hand is a different story altogether. The camera view would allow you to see your desk and it could overlay certain 3D data above your desk. Sadly no VR head sets seem to include cameras(I am no expert) except google cardboard. Unfortunately google cardboard doesn't seem to be being embraced by developers.

 

I really wish developers, Autodesk included, would embrace google cardboard. I can justify a HTC Vive and the PC to run it to demo work to customers on, but what if they don't come alone? Do we take turn to walk around the virtual factory? I can easily justify 10 Google cardboards, even the more slick looking versions. This would allow me to walk a group of people around a virtual project at the same time. Gaming tools would also allow us to network everyone into the same environment for a demo. Customers would just need to have their smart phone with them, pretty likely. I can't see me getting a budget for 10 HTC Vive's and the PCS to run them.

I'm as thrilled as anyone about the day I can be Tony Stark and design an entire skyscraper with augmented reality, using nothing but my bare hands and conversing with a human-like AI. But I'm with pball and brotherkennyh in that I think AR/VR has the potential to be great for presenting, viewing, and exploring a design, but maybe not so much for actual working. There's too much need for precise manipulation and data entry in professional design work, which you just can't do with your bare hands. The keyboard and mouse really are powerful tools. Just imagine trying to use the browser tree with your bare hands. Or work with the Parameters table. Or the BOM.

 

That said, perhaps a hybrid of AR supplemented with the typical professional interface and keyboard+mouse control would be the ideal solution. It would essentially be like using Inventor as it is now except the graphics window would be replaced by the AR environment. The toolbars, etc. would surround that AR graphics area. Basically, ditch your monitors but keep your desk, keyboard, and mouse. The AR headset could "project" a screen where your monitor would be, or on the wall behind your desk, for word processing, email, spreadsheets, etc., but the Inventor graphics area would be replaced by your desk overlaid with your model, and the toolbars would surround the area of your gaze.

 

Sounds like a pipe dream... but it just may be possible in the very near future. I can't tell you how many times I watched this video and this one and how giddy they made me every time. I may be a little cynical toward the possible shortcomings of AR/VR in professional design, but I'm just as excited about its positive potential as anyone else.

Please consider this idea as a separate UI environment, rather than trying to make the current interface tools fit VR needs.

 

I think in the past when making changes to the UI the Inventor development team has demonstrated a lack of sensitivity concerning existing users, and the speed and efficiency they have with familiar tools.

 

New users who do not have years of muscle memory might find using a mouse and a dialog box clunky as they play with Inventor, but the rhythm, efficiency, and accuracy of existing user's work is impacted when they must suddenly think about interface options that were once second nature.

 

I'm not saying do not ever make changes to improve the interface, but please do so without "wholesale" changes. I'm certain there is some middle ground.

This would be a remarkable tool for both presenting to customers at the office, and making better design decisions along the way. Please implement ASAP! This would, as Thorleif said, be an alternative to 3D-printing in many cases.

I have a brand new rift with touch controllers and a subscription to inventor lt. I really really want to do my modeling in vr. Being able to naturally interact with the parts would speed development and seeing a part to scale could help designers develop a real feeling for the scale of the work.
