We often use overlays to show outlines of parts or structure and where they sit in relation to the assembly that is the main point of the drawing. I've included two examples below- I've used an overlay of the canopy to show it's location above the seats in a plan view, and I've used an overlay of the hull bottom and side plates to show their outlines on the boat structure drawing.
Overlays work ok for this- they are better than hidden lines because hidden lines generally show too much detail- internal workings for example- that are not relevant to drawings like these. However setting up views like this does involve a lot of messing about with View Reps.
My idea is: I'd like to be able to show an overlay of one assembly (or part) on top of a view of a different assembly (or part). If the assemblies/parts have the same origin and orientation this shouldn't cause any problems. So in the second example below I could have one assembly of the boat's structure (the main view) and another assembly of the boat's shell plating (the overlay), and I wouldn't need to have a third assembly with both these in as sub-assemblies and two view reps (and a pos rep) just to create this view.
