Option to change middle mouse button to "rotate view"

Option to change middle mouse button to "rotate view"

I know Autodesk likes the idea of having the middle mouse button as pan. But most operations in modeling involve rotating and navigating the model. Pan as a direct mouse click is OK if you are working in 2D. And yes I know you can drag the navigation cube and yes I know you can hit "shift" and middle mouse button at the same time.

But why not just have a simple selection to customize your own interface.

Perhaps by making the platform more flexible to the user, it will attract and retain users to the software.

Thanks for the teaser, Chris! Can't wait for Easter to come 😉

FYI for anyone interested, here are a few related ideas that would help further round out our ability to pan/zoom/orbit with a standard scroll-wheel mouse:

Status changed to: Implemented

This idea has been implemented within Autodesk Inventor 2021.1. The Display tab within the Applications Options dialog box now provides settings where you can map the middle mouse button to zoom, pan, or orbit. Special thanks to everyone who cast a vote for it.

Fantastic! Thanks so much, Dan!

FYI for everyone, not only was customization for MMB added, so was customization for Ctrl+MMB and Shift+MMB. This is really great as it allows you to map all three (Pan/Zoom/Orbit) to the MMB+keyboard combination of your choice. I personally can't wait to upgrade to 2021 so I can set Ctrl+MMB to be continuous (smooth) zoom, that will be really handy.

Thanks again to Dan and the Inventor team for not only implementing what this idea requested, but also giving us some additional customization with it.

@dan_szymanski Thank you to Autodesk for not only implementing this, but also for giving the ability to customize multiple middle mouse button functions with Shift and Ctrl. (Even more versatile than Fusion 360's MMB behavior selection.)

Existing users can keep the functionality they're used to, and new users and multiple-platform users can make it do what they need.

Hello, sincerely, I had a project to migrate from solidworks to inventor but when I see the poverty of the management of the user interface commands. The fact that it is not possible to configure any function under any button is just abysmal. You are not ready to win over new users with this approach, especially those using solidworks.

Seriously, 2021.1 improvement> ability to change middle mouse button action 😂😂😂😂😂 Wake up guys! or fire the project managers! we are in 2020, you have been in the game for 20 years and you only have that? We will have set foot on Mars that you will still be wondering if the rotation would not be more judicious under the left click ?? Sincerely ask yourself the right questions.

If you are lacking an idea, go see what is being done on solidworks> everything is configurable, to meet all areas of activity and to be in line with all user profiles and this for more than 10 years.

It would also be smart to be able to assign a shortcut other than the pan, to the directional arrows. An eternity that others do and you do not wonder why they still keep offering it?

@dan_szymanski First off, thanks for making this change! However, I must say that the method for setting the center of rotation is not great. As far as I can tell, you have to left-click on the part to set the center, which is a problem if you're orbiting while performing some other operation (creating a feature, using the measuring tool, etc.), because you are forced to select something you don't want to select. So, I find that I frequently have to go back to holding F4 to set the center of rotation, which kind of defeats the purpose of this update. It would be much better if a single middle-button click could be used to set the center of rotation, the same way that it does while holding F4. Either that, or change to automatically orbiting around the cursor, since that is almost always the desired behavior anyways.

How can I customize my MMB to rotate the model in INVENTOR-2021 ?  This option is available in other verison. Please suggest for INVENTOR-2021.

@mpatelX8U5Y- It looks like it was implemented in 2021.1, so you'll need that update to get this feature.

Then it should be available at the bottom of Application Options --> Display.
