My Customer @edwardhortonCU800 uses Frame Generator to produce custom railing for Civil-related projects. Some of the Frame Members generated are curved and therefore produced when applied to the curved geometry generated in the skeleton part. These curved members may have several infill beams to complete each railing section sub-assembly. The curved top and lower beams have holes cut into them to accommodate each vertical infill bar. The Top and Lower Beam members are generally rectangular box sections, and the holes needed to seat each vertical infill bar are generally laser cut before the beam is bent into its final shape. Edward wants an easier way of producing an unbended frame generator member, similar to the unbend feature of a sheet metal component, that would allow placement of the required hole features used for vertical infills. Edward also wants to be able to show this in the drawing that he wishes to send to the laser cutting company, as they cut the holes prior to bending the component in real life throughout the manufacturing process. The laser cutting company have recently been asking for the model for use in the laser CAM workflow. Edward is only able to output the already bent frame member containing the holes, but the laser cutting company need the straight version. This would also help the straight, unbent beam could be produced on a drawing in a similar workflow as overlay, where the bent component can be added as a drawing view, and overlay produces a flattened overlay of the unbent component. As a workaround, I have shown Edward how to generate the individual beams using iFeatures and applying bendlines to ensure the component can be bent and then flattened using Model States. But this is a completely different way of modelling, especially when the Frame Generator workflow is the quick and efficient method for designing complex frame assemblies. Surely a set of features can be created to help with this type of workflow in Frame Generator, complementing the recent advancements in this area of the product. I have attached a screen recording of the workaround I provided to Edward using iFeatures and Model States as an example, and the part file for anyone else to review to understand the intention of the Idea for Frame Generator Enhancement.
