Hole to Slot; Slot to Hole

It would be benificial if the HOLE command included SLOTS based on the centreline of hole or slot;

i.e. change your hole into a slot (LxWx Orientation) and visa-versa.

In the same command change the slot back to a hole.

It would also be good to select the centre of the slot and place an axis rather than selecting the slot faces.

This would make the software more efficient.

Great idea, totally agree. Slots are currently a pain to do. It would also be great if it was possible to constrain to the centre of a slot during assembly, then vary the offset either way as required.

Don't forget to have the options Counterbore and Counterslot available for slots!

I am asking for this for several years. By default a bolt should be placed in the center of a slot. Quiet a lot of work to do this in Inventor today. 😞

Inventor 2020 added the ability to select the center of a slot when adding a Joint. Excellent!!!

It does seem to need me to hover on the slot edge and hold the Control key, which traps that selection, so that I can pick the slot's center. And the feature has to have been created from a slot sketch. (I'm still exploring this.)

Benefit of the above idea: You can use the hole tool to allow calculate clearance. Plus it'll help with automated Hole Tables.

It would be efficient when modelling to have a Slotted hole added to the Type section in the hole command. Using a center point as the control for the feature.

Great idea, there is a similar idea by @jdits7 way back in 2013, and a revived one  by @Hunteil that already have a lot of support called, Slot Feature Creation in modeling mode and Suggestion: Hole Feature, Please expand options for Slot, Hex, Sq Holes! , it would be really helpful to have a feature like this!

Can you add a slot option in the hole command. That way you can change between the 2 easily if needed.

Very nice suggestion, but curious how that would work with existing hole features that have insert constraints associated with them.

Sometimes when making slots, I'll make holes first, then sketch slots based on the hole geometry.
Centre points constrained to each other, and a tangent constraint between the straight line of the slot and the hole edge.
Slot made with extrude.
I can then suppress/unsuppress the extrude that made the slot at will and control the width of the slot by the changing the hole diameter.

Thank you for your suggestion. I use the holes with center points all the time, but not sure if I ever thought of using it this way. Is it tough to change the extrusion when you use it this way?

Changing the slot? As in turning it on or off?

Switching between hole or slot is simply a matter of finding the extrusion in the model browser than makes the slot, right clicking it, and selecting Suppress Features.  Your slotted hole then reverts back to round hole.
Right click it again, choose Unsuppress Features, and you've got your slotted hole back.

One thing to look out for though - any sketches or features you make that come after the slot most not be constrained to the slot.  If you suppress the slot and it has something constrained to it you'll end up with problems.

This isn't something I do very often, usually only if I'm unsure during designing the part if it should be round holes or slotted holes.  It may seem like a hassle, but it does make it very easy to swap between the two.

Sort of on the same wavelength, adding in an extended CSK hole would be a nice addition

Basically through hole with a counterbored CSK hole.  The top of the CSK fastener could be located beneath the surface of the part/assembly a C/B section above it.

Great for areas when other objects slide past or over the top.  The fastener is protected as the part around it is worn down to a minimum.  I do this currently by C/B a hole- usually with an extrude and then make a hole at the bottom of the C/B and using the CSK function create the seat.

Slotted C/B -CSK holes would be the next addition to this series  for parts that would rotate with cylinders or cams
