Shortcut Folder in Inventor Open dialog box

Shortcut Folder in Inventor Open dialog box

In the open dialog box of Inventor, in the left pane I want to have my shortcut folders for my projects under the workspace created for easy access.

Currently, the only way I can think of is to edit the vault project and create Frequently Used Subfolders. This is not a practical way if you're talking of multi users assigned for different directories (projects). Also, it is not allowed for our users to edit vault project file.

Make something similar in Vault client when you right mouse button click on a folder, there is a create shortcut option.

This will be a big help instead of going through a very deep sub-folders.

Thanks.

Cheers this is my first ever participation in Ideastation.

I would like to be able to set frequently used folder. I had a small work around by putting a folder shortcut in the workspace, but that is still not very smoth.

In most Open dialogs a user can drag a Windows Explorer shortcut over to the side. AutoCAD can do this as well. It would be nice to give the users their own favorites without having to modify the Project File.

I get this request from many people. Many times the Vault Admin locks the Project File and users are left with work arounds for shortcuts.

If your using Vault then each user can create as many shortcuts as they want, unique to them.

In the Vault client you can right click on any folder or file and choose create shortcut. They are then available within the client for speedy browsing.

Then when using the open from Vault command in Inventor these shortcuts are also available on the left handside. As are saved searches.

I am unable to drag a folder to create the shortcut in the windows dialog box.

David,

I want a shortcut to a folder on a network location not in the vault.

You can also create Windows Shortcuts and place them in the Workspace... this can reflect any Vault shortcuts you make if you want... regarding the comment about the Vault Porject file being locked by the Admin... that is a good thing. General users shouldn't ever be making changes to that project file.

In my opinion the whole Inventor Open dialog should be re-written. We should be able to display Inventor iProperties in the detail view (Just like you can in the Vault Open dialog). As mentioned, adding the ability to drag a folder or file onto the pane on the left, to create a 'favourites' pallet would be awesome as well.

Hi,

Are you talking about "Open" command in Inventor or "Open from Vault" command In Inventor? Because we do have shortcuts for Folders in "Open from Vault" dialog.

If it is "Open" Command in Inventor then this item should go to Inventor Ideastation.

It would be great if sort cuts from Vault would show up for vault users.  For not vault users it would be great if the shorts created by dragging a folder to favorites Icon in widows explorer would show up.

I work in a fairly large vaulted environment with dozens of folders for dozens of designs.  It would be really sweet to have short cuts in the Inventor file dialogs to those 3 for 4 that I am actually working in.

FYI @scottmoyse and others interested, there are a couple suggestions that request the ability to show iProperties in the folder explorer dialogs. You can vote for them here:

What if you are not using Vault? not using AutodeskA360?

We are hardwired into our server.

How do I create a shortcut file into the left panel of the open (or save as) dialog box?

It seams like its locked?

I have the same issue with te open/save dialogs.

When working with several projects, within the Vault project file, you will notice that the folder that the dialog starts in is all over the place, depending on in what folder you used that particular open/save/insert/etc dialog last. Having it show a shortcut list (same list in all dialogs, and possibly the same as the Vault shortcut) or use the most recent open file's location as a startingpoint.

When working an assembly it stands to reason that a new file command is to be used in that assembly. so when it is time to save, the dialog might just default to that assemblies file location. Same for the insert command, I often place files to import in the projects folder or a level above it. But it often starts the dialog in a library location as that's where it got used the previous time. And yes there is reason to stick with that location as one might insert another item from that location, but still... And that is where the shortcut list comes in.
