Frame Generator Member Naming

I think it would be nice, on a per project basis, to have the ability to set a file naming convention for all new frame members in that project.

Currently we name all frame members the same, and those names come from the COntent Center, but then I RENAME them as they are being placed, so that they include the job number as a prefix.  That way I avoid having duplicate filenames in Vault, AND... more importantly, it makes the so much easier to copy using Copy Design.  I can simply do a find and replace from the old job number to the new job number... very quick if the job number is there.

So... it would be nice to have some sort of box where I could specify a prefix to be added to all new parts generated by FG was they are placed.... it gets a bit tedious renaming hundreds of pieces of steel at a time.

This idea has been implemented within Autodesk Inventor 2019.2. A new option named "File Naming Defaults" exists at the bottom of the Application Options > File tab.  Once invoked you can define file name defaults for frame generator; Frame Assembly, Skeleton Part, Frame Members. Doing so will pre-populate any configured convention on instantiation of your frame generator assembly.  Additionally you can assign unique file name attributes, such as family properties, materials, etc. as well as numbering schemes (index or unique numbers).  Lastly you can customize the folder structure for where the files will get saved.  Special thanks to everyone who cast a vote for it.

This functionality will be a time saver. 

Just a suggestion.  I've noticed that in 2018 several paths have been added to the Application Options > File tab.  Back in the day I could control/setup all our users environments by having the select the correct Project File.  However, many of these new entries under file are not available to override with the Project File.  It would be really good if all the entries could be optionally overridden with the Project File settings.

Hello Everyone,

Can anyone please tell me why does my frame file name is coming up such a random number (please see attached snap shot) instead of regular Frame0001?  All my frame members are getting named in same way and the worst part is while plotting the drawing when I go in the folder of the frame, the frame members have different numbers. 

If anyone can suggest a conclusion  to this is much appreciated. frame member name in feature treeframe member name in folder

Hi,

The intention is to avoid  duplicated file name, similar to Inventor Tube & Pipe.  If you prefer to the legacy naming scheme, you can customize it in old way by visiting application option-->File Tab-->File Naming Defaults in the bottom.
