Enable using 3d sketch geometry for assembly constraint

It would be helpful if it is possible to use 3d sketches directry for assembly constraint.

In the case, we have to add some working axis or plane on the 3d sketch.
If possible, our work is streamlined.

Please see the detail on the following video.

I suggest the possibility to select 3D-sketch objects (points, lines) when adding assembly constraints.

This is usefull when I have a skeleton with a 3D-sketch.

This workflow works with 2D-sketch objects, so I would like the same possibility with 3D-sketch objects.

Accepted idea [US-83863]. Thanks!

Great news, this has been a very useful tool in other CAD systems. I look forward to being able to use it in Inventor.

Been patiently waiting for this capability for years, not sure why it's so difficult. We do a lot of piping, but management are reluctant to go full T&P route, so were stuck with constraining either to work axis or frame generated pipe.

At the moment, you need to create work geometry on top of the 3D sketch in order to constrain in assembly.

Many thanks!

This is one of the reason my department starts switching from Inventor to SW lately. Our job is to assembly our products into a 3D-sketch centerline to create a complete assembly model for the customers. However with the extra steps of creating multiple "work axis" and "work points" (sometime work planes) it took a ton of time, hard to see, and way complicated the process for future revise. Also in Inventor Assembly Environment, only 2D-Sketches are allow to be created, but somehow not 3D-Sketches, so we have to create a new part for just the 3D-Sketch and place it in to our main assembly before starting the job, that made our design process became even more complicated. Now in SW, we are able to draw 3D-Sketch straight in the Assembly and "mate" parts directly to that 3D-Sketch. We were able to cut 40%~50% of time to complete the same job in SW. We still have couple engineers are using Inventor for the old revision, but sometime we just start everything over again in SW. Autodesk never listen to their users for years, I am glad that our management decided to move forward.

it's been 5 years already, any update?

When will this possibility finally be implemented? I've been waiting for this for ages now.

I think that Autodesk is making fun of us here. You can't accept something and then completely reject it. Autodesk should finally realize that a general overhaul of the 3D sketch should finally be on the agenda.

Now it is a 6 years old post.

We haven't seen the update in current Inventor versions.

IMOH it is a simple and useful feature in Inventor.

When will we get it?

We'd really like to see the status changes to "Accepted" rather than "Future...". 😀

Dear Sir/Madam,

Being able to constraint parts to a 3d sketch (skeleton) inside an assembly is critical for designers using a top down design approach.

Usually, there are tens or hundreds of parts need to be assembled to the skeleton (3d sketch).

Adding axis or point features to the skeleton can double up both work load and complexity that leads to an unreliable assembly.

This important product capability is so important. I noticed that this request has been left behind for years. For whatever reason, the development team should really take this issue seriously.

Please take action, no matter how difficult it is.

Thanks.

Just ran into this issue and read this thread going back to 2015! So it’s now end of February 2025 and it appears this desired capability has not been addressed…..on to the suggested work around…
