Clicking the Orbit hotkey (Shift+Scroll Wheel) should set the orbit center point

Clicking the Orbit hotkey (Shift+Scroll Wheel) should set the orbit center point

We can orbit the view by holding down F4, or by holding down Shift+MMB (MMB = middle mouse button, or scroll wheel). Shift+MMB is usually more convenient; however, it doesn't provide a way to change the orbit center like F4 does. I propose that holding down Shift and doing a single click of MMB, without holding it down, should set the orbit center, point just like using F4 and clicking inside the reticle does.

That way we can hold down Shift, click MMB to set the center, then press and hold down MMB and perform the desired orbit about the correct center point.

Looks like this has been a previous idea also.

I think it would be simpler to merely rotate around your current mouse location, without having to click anything, or press a button.

Maybe I'm wrong but, how many times have you ever wanted to rotate around something other than where your mouse is currently located?

Side Rant: Needing two hands to rotate a part is insanity if you've ever worked with other programs that let you do it: even Fusion 360 gives you that option!

I don't know why, but out of all the Autodesk products, Inventor has THE WORST control. And I am not even exaggerating. People here, working in the industry are obviously not using only one software. If you are in the industry, you are probably using more than one CAD software or atleast have the knowledge. And with all the armed, a person can simply see why Inventor has made some of the worst decision for navigation. And they don't even try to change it, maybe because people in industry don't like having stuff change in their favorite most acquainted software. But I can tell you, if changing the rotation pivot could be easier - I will take it. Makes life easier. Less hassle, more productivity.

Totally agree. Even simple web apps are better are view/rotation.
Although, in defense of Autodesk, the right-click thing (right-click drag to select menu item) really limits what can be done with mouse controls.

if you have used Autodesk Alias, you absolutely know it can be done. Alias has by far the most rigid navigation system of all the applications I have used. It took a little getting used to for a day or two. Max. And then, everything was very very smooth. So seeing Inventor's bad implementation just irritates me.

Having to press a key to do any pan, rotate, zoom is so lame. That’s why I have a 3Dconnexion mouse. I only use it with Inventor. All the others have mouse only (now keys needed) controls out of the box, or options to allow it.

Inventor forums are the only place where I hear about 3d mouses for some reason...

Please make this a reality. There is no point in rotating around a point outside the screen. F4 method is used every day, but it takes some time.

This is so lame, Please just copy Solidworks. It works better in so many respects.

Totally agree - there are various ways that are so much better than this. Copy some good ones!

Just give us some real options!
