Browser Name update

Browser Name update

Hello,

if i change the browser name of an ipt and i copy that ipt the browser name from the copied document is incorrect, it uses  the 'old' browsername.

That's maybe correct, but how do i see it if the browsername is incorrect?

What about placing an (*) after or before the BrowserName to see quickly that there is a difference?

Greetings

If I'm thinking what I'm thinking you are saying here, there is a bit of a fix for this.

The part or file name of the copied file is still showing the original file's name in the browser tree, correct?

If so, slowly double click on it in the browser like you are going to rename it.

Once it is highlighted for the rename, put in one space, then click off of it to accept the rename, it should then return to the correct name of the copied file.

Or am I confused on what you are trying to do here?

Not sure why this works or why this happens but I've seen it twice in the last week or so from 2 different clients.

This should probably be posted in the general discussion groups though.

Hi joflaherty,

many thanks for your comment.

But that is not the question. To fix the wrong browser name is easy, but what is if you don't know or see that the browser

name is incorrect?

Hi,

good suggestion. I'd prefer to show an overridden displayname in blue + bold synchronuous to overridden position in part list.

I think you shouldn't be able to change the broswer name at the top of the tree at all.  There is no real reason to have it change and you run into these issues when you do.

Sorry, guess I misunderstood what you were attempting to solve with this idea.

I have to agree with Mark here, changing the name in the browser can and does create issues.

Again, guess I'm not quite understanding what your need and or process is for this.

1. This is an official option in Inventor, User sometimes uses that.

2. Do you heared something about Productsream Professional? There is an option to fill the inventor browsername with additional information like partnumber+description+version .....

I thnk that we should be able to change it because we can add some good info to help out.  But it should be flagged as noted.  However, I like the idea to be able to add info like M Hermann said above.  The main name can be fixed but we can append some additional info to help out.  Especially when you lots of parts or assemblies with only part numbers it helps to add further lablels.

Well the ONLY time I have ever had a need to rename browser nodes is when I am using iLogic in the assembly.  Granted that the browser node change in the part carries to first placement in an assembly, I can see your point.  Maybe if it was colored blue like an override in a Parts List I would be okay with it, but I don't like the asterisk idea.  Or a right click and "Revert Browser Name" or 'Static" toggle might be okay.

Hi,

Some may not be aware that we can revert browser names in the assembly productivity tools, it is called Rename Browser Nodes. This allows naming them in different ways as well. I am not sure, but I think once you touch a browser node name you break the associativity of the Browser Node name to the part name for all the other items in the assembly. You cannot trust them because you don’t know what has changed. I have to double check often within the assembly or right click on the browser item and choose iProperties to get the correct name. Inventor needs this fixed because it has hurt us in the past. We are learning to not trust these browser names, so it is important to mark them in some way. Or better yet have Autodesk make them more robust, such as more associative. That’s why I think adding info to the existing, unchangeable name part of the node would be great.

I'd rather extend this idea in several ways:

A) Add two different marks be shown:
"1st" (let say "[*]") -  if the name doesn't match the default
"2nd" (let say "[+]") -  if the name is 'stabilized' in term of Autodesk (overridden but value is match to the default)

B) For assemblies I would like to have those two marks for component nodes as well.

C) We also need appropriate API properties for the above (now I can check the match but It is impossible to determine the 'stabilized' state).
