Did you mean:

Auto 'up' orientation of new sketch.

Auto 'up' orientation of new sketch.

How many times do you create a new sketch and apply a vertical or horizontal constraint to it, only to find that vertical is actually horizontal and vice versa. I know that they have now given us these 'tell-tale' lines, but that's only half a solution. Why not automatically orientate the new sketch so that up is up!!

This was how it used to work in earlier versions and is still possible with the right settings:

That seems to work.

Never knew that option was there so cheers for that!!

It would be really nice to have a right click option to switch horizontal and vertical at the point you are selecting.  so you can do one, and if it's wrong, not have to select back at the top to rotate the constraint 90 degree.

Also - it would be nice if it automatically changed it for you, based on your current view.  If you are looking at something, the top part of the screen to the bottom is vertical, regardless of the axis.  Obviously, Inventor would apply either horizontal or vertical based on the co-ordinate system, but you select based on visual.

Hi, if you refer to an earlier response to this request, like me, you'll see that there is a setting in Inventor that will do this. Sadly, for those of us that don't know of this, it is well hidden and switched off by default. Once you switch it on, it makes sketching so much easier!

Autodesk, make it more obvious and switch it on by default!!

Incidentally, it's not even in the 'sketch' tab of 'options'. Autodesk thought it would be much more logical to put it in the 'display' tab!

They are clever little sausages aren't they!!!

It still doesn't do what I suggest - it just rotates the sketch for you when you create it.  This is not always optimal - sometimes you need to LOOK at a sketch in a certain way (or it's easier) there's no reason horizontal and vertical can't follow the current visual orientation of the sketch (other CAD software does it that way...)

I take your point. The horizontal and vertical constraint datums should align themselves to your optimum sketch orientation. Having the ability to toggle this would be a bonus.

Struggle with this as well.

A possibility within the sketch environment to rotate the X-Y axis would be helpful.

Often you find out halfway through sketching that your orientation is of, giving problems with the constraints.

You can go out of the sketch and redefine the axis, but than your sketched items go all over the place.
