Workplane tangent to sphere?

I am trying to create a part which looks somewhat like this:

For this I need a sketch on a sphere to get the white portion onto the sphere. I plan to then emboss it onto the surface. 

How do I do it? are there any other feasible ideas?

The problem is that the emboss won't work on the sphere..

Did you click the Wrap emboss?    Can you attach the files for others to look at?
