work plane on 4 points to make a sketch to make the actual part

I am trying to make a work plane that I will eventually turn into a part. The Prelim file I included in this post shows the sketch idea of what I am needing to make. I think what I want to do is create a work plane on 4 unique points.

 

Thoughts?

You only need 3 points to make a plane, I have not seen a 4 point option before.

Hello,

Lets call my 4 points; 12/3/6/9 (like a clock)

Points 12&9 are on the same face and points 3&6 are on a different face.

Point 12 is above all points and point 6 is below all points. Points 3&9 are in the middle.

12  then 3 then 9 then 6 is the order of changes.

 

Man, I hope I explained that clearly. lol

This almost sounds like one of those riddles I did as a kid! Tom and sally both made treats, sally and the person who went to the store... haha. Sounds to me like you'll need more than one plane

So, can a flat part be made from multiple planes?

A flat part is in essence going to be a (bounded) plane with some thickness. It will be fully defined in orientation by 3 points just like a plane would. You could however make a folded part and flatten it. Could you try to explain a bit better what you're trying to do? I'm not able to fully see what the end goal is

If there is a 'twist' in the plane then you will need two planes to create the part, and it will need a fold from one corner to the other. (unless it's a loft).

 

I should have done the attached as a sheet metal part but you get the idea.

Hello, I figured out what I needed to do.

 

Here is some general knowledge of what was trying to be accomplished:

I've included the IPT file to share with my friends here. This is a slotted hood with a sloped plate for the machine we are attaching it to. As concrete is being broken up, we are pulling as much dust off of this to help control whats in the air during operation for better visual needs, everyone is already masked and suited up as needed but it becomes hard to "see" during this process. This shows 1 of 5 placed on an incline. 

 

What I did:

Basically, I created 2 work planes, added the sketch I needed to each work plane, then I created 4 work points where I wanted the new plane to cross. Used those points to create my plane, added sketch, extruded. I know that I could have made my "sloped" surface in a different file but that is a lesson learned for future situations. I chose to use the same file for ease of creation.

 

This is the solution I came up with in the end that worked.  ehhhhh...... (can of worms)...... I am open to HELPFUL criticism on ways to have accomplished this a different way. I've learned that even though we use the same 3D software here, we each create our parts a little differently.

Uhmm, did you import Sketch1 from some other software?

The first thing I would have done is fully define Sketch1.

I would have fully defined Sketch2 (and all other sketches).

I would have modeled the part(s?) in such a way that I could get Flat Patterns (assuming this is sheet metal).
