Why Task Sheduler migrates libraries??!

Hi,

I used Task Scheduler to migrate one of my projects to AI 2017, and now I must say I ma pretty annoyed.

Why on earth this utility migrates Library files??? I do not mean CC but files from other project that are used as libraries in this project I was migrating.

Now all other projects that use this libraries can no longer read this files !!!! And I did not want to migrate this projects. I wanted them to stay in their AI relieses. 

Did anyone think about that?

This tool you provided turned out to be dangerous to user.

I am sorry to hear that a folder of files was migrated that you did not intend to have migrated.

I am sure that you will be able to restore those files from back up.

I guess that the big questions is why you should migrate libraries.

If you do not migrate your libraries then you take a performance hit everytime you open an Inventor document that references that part that is not migrated to the  current release that is being used.

The reason for this is that inventor will migrate ALL files that are not on the current release that is opening these files.

If the files are not saved (because they are in a library folder), you will migrate then each and every time you access them.

If it is one or two files then it is probably negligible.

As the number of files that need to be migrated grows, you will notice it.

Another reason to migrate is that Inventor can automatically and reliably migrate skipping one release like 2015 to 2017.

If you skip more than one release, we can't guarantee your results.

Then you will need to do intermediate migrations to get to the release that you want 2013 to 2015 to 2017.

Hi,

As for restoring from back up - well thing is not that easy. I had made back up of my project but not libraries. So it is real problem for me at the moment.

Another thing is why and when to migrate if at all.

I believe my situation is not really unusual. I use older version of inventor and only starting to try 2017. In my case I use AI 2015 because 2016 release was so much worse than 2015 so after few attempts I resigned from using it at all. So for me basically AI 2016 was totally waste of money.

Now I am trying AI 2017, but I am still not certain if I will decide to switch. Also I do not like to change software in the middle of the project so jobs in progress will most likely got finished in 2015.

So I am very unhappy with some files of those project getting migrated to 2017.

There should be an option in Task scheduler specify if files from library folders should be migrated!

I always migrate all of my Inventor files using the Task Scheduler - this gives you an early warning of any issues that might occur in the newer release.

And, unfortunately there is no excuse not to have a (or multiple) backups.

What I can suggest for you at this point, is log an Inventor's Ideas  post. 

This information is reviewed by each product manager for purposes of future development to see if they could implemented this new/enhanced feature:

Please let us know how you would like us to improve how the task scheduler could work better for you and others.

Do not be afraid to provide details on why we should implement this for the betterment of the Inventor community.

thank you Bob for a suggestion.

However I feel this is not working as you described it.

In reality Ideas Station is just a place to have users put their ideas so Autodesk gets them for free. And it is not so that they are decided to be implemented based on judgement if they are  reasonable or just a common scene enhancements.

Autodesk only implements what it thinks is profitable for Autodesk, not caring at all for individual users. To have implemented something that users want it needs to be voted by some ridiculously big number of users.

Idea to fix this stupid behaviour of task scheduler will not gain such a support because to few users uses it and cares about this particular detail.

You, a Customer Support team member, already know what is wrong with task scheduler behaviour. Please bring this up in Autodesk if you think it is responsible request not to migrate libraries when user only wants to migrate project.

As for my self I try to actively inform Autodesk about issues with inventor. Currently number of e-mails I have exchanged with Autodesk employees is around 1200.

I am now more aware what I can expect from Autodesk Corporation witch obviously is only interested in its profit, and not at all in making best possible software.
