Why is dimension selecting mid point in sketch instead of curve/line?

When I am working on a sketch and try to create dimensions, it selects the mid point of a line when what I need is the line itself. To select the line, I then need to click "Select Other" to choose the curve/line.  Having to click "Select Other" every time I want to create a dimension is far too time consuming. Is there any way for the dimension not to select the mid point? I've tried zooming in on the line, but even then I can be far away from the mid point and it will still select the mid point over the line itself.

Under your tools > application options > sketch tab, check your 2D sketch constraint settings. If you are utilizing infer constraints turn the mid point constraint off and that could help your issue.

When you are clicking on the line are you near the middle and maybe accidentally selecting the mid point? Can you show a screen capture to see the workflow?

For example with the attached photo, I want to select the short end of the rectangle, but instead it automatically selects the mid point. I'm not sure if this helps at all. There have been instances (I'm unable to recreate them currently) where I am nowhere near the center point and it still selects it over the line itself.

This may sound silly, but if I am zoomed out just a little it will default to the middle on a scenario like that, but zooming in will allow the selection of the line itself. I'm not certain if the locate tolerance in tools > application options has anything to do with tightening this selection or not.

Doesn't sound silly at all, I agree with you that that should work. I've attached a couple more screenshots. In this example, the line is approx. 19mm long and yet even with it zoomed in across my entire screen, it still won't allow me to select the line unless I click "select other". I also tried the locate tolerance as you suggested, but unfortunately that didn't help.

Did this randomly start happening? Have you tried the Inventor Reset command? to see if that makes a difference? You will lose custom settings if you have changed anything.

Hi, can you share the file or a "dummy" file that exhibits the same behavior?

It started occurring after we updated Inventor to the 2023 version. Previously, we had been working with the 2020 version.

Here is an example file taken from a larger sketch I was working on. On two separate computers, dimensions of the short sides of the rectangles would only choose a point unless you "select other".

Thank you for sharing.  Unfortunately, it works just fine for me.  I was hoping to see something jump out at me that would explain what you are seeing.  😞
