If I understand your question(s)..

Basically you design a part with limited info, make it adaptive and  develop a relationship with your assembly.  As the assembly changes, that given part changes.

This video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n54hkuUqBco is based on an old version of Inventor, the concept is still the same.

Hi! There are many good learning materials about Adaptive at Autodesk Knowledge Network and Youtube. The concept of Adaptive has to be in a context of an assembly. It is a way to establish geometric relationship between two parts within an assembly. When a feature has "Adaptive" checked, it means it is subject to the change from another part within an assembly. The part itself isn't aware the adaptor or where it is adaptive. It only knows that it is adaptive somewhere. The relationship is managed within the given assembly where such relationship exists.

Also Adaptive relationship can only occur in one assembly. This means a part cannot be adaptive in two different assemblies since the two definitions will fight each other.

Many thanks!
