I've never used virtual parts before, and whilst I can find plenty of information on how to create them, I cannot find anything that tells me what they do or their purpose.
Could someone please tell me what the advantages/disadvantages are of using these.
Do they appear in drawings, boms, etc..

virtual parts are useful when you need parts that you can't model or you don't need to model in your Part List.
