I am dimensioning a section view of a cylindrical feature. When I select linear diameter from rt click menu one extension line and a dimension line disappear. Any one know why.

Why are you selecting linear diameter for this?

If you simply select the line - Inventor should give you the diameter dimension.

...the long line that is the circle in edge view, not the short lines or the endpoints.

Because I am tired of having to manually insert the Diameter symbol with the text editor so I thought I would try something different.

Inventor should automatically enter the Ø for you if you select the line.  (Since it is actually a circle in edge view.)

Inventor has never done that. I have always had to manually insert a dimension symbol using the text editor. Its one of those things that makes me think Inventor is a lesser software compared to other packages. The one that starts with S always automatically inserted the Ø when dimensioning cylinders in a cut view but not Inventor.

Works fine for me.

Can you Attach *.ipt and corresponding *.idw or *.dwg that exhibits this issue?

Every thing I have done on this system in the past 3 years that involves dimensioning a cylinder view derived from a hole has exhibited this failure to automaticaly attach a DIA symbol. I always figured it was a shortcoming of Inventor not being able to do what other systems have been able to do for decades. Here is a quick part and corresponding drawing I just made for a sample.

It adds the diameter symbol just fine for me, see screencast.  You just have to select the proper edge to dimension.

It never occurred to me to select that line instead of the cylinder edges. Thank you, that will save some time. Now on the 7.250 cut in that dia sym will still need to be manually inserted?

Unfortunately, yes I think the only way to add the symbol to that dimension is to do it manually.

Why not simply Retrieve the Model dimensions?
