Ways to configure parts or assemblies,

Hi everyone,

being a newbie in Inventor coming from Solidworks and I am struggling with making a valve with different configurations and some parts in different colors.

I need the valve to have different bodys (grey part): rolled Groove picture 1 and flanged picture 2.

I also need the top Gearbox and handwheel to have different colors depending on where they are used.

Next version will have a larger Handwheel so this is going to be expanded  if I can figure out how to do this best.

I thought I can do this in a part file with "Model States" but the color changes don't seem to work.

Then I made the parts as seperate parts and assembled them thinking I can do different representations of the parts but that doesnt seem to work either. At last I made an  IAssembly thinking I can do what I want but it seems I can only change the material properties and not the appearance/color of each part.

I can't believe how difficult this is or I am missing something.

I don't want to waist more time with this so appreciate some help please.

Thanks in advance!

Colours are managed by view representations. I don't think you can do this through model states.

Create a new view rep.

Change your colours (appearance on the top bar).

Save.

Create another view rep.

Change your colours.

Save

By the way, as far as I know, there is no way to link a view rep and a model state.

Also note that this is an override at assembly level and will not push down to part level, so if you have a part that could be zinc and another that is painted, you cannot show that on the part drawing, you would need to have both models in the assembly and suppress the one you don't want.
