Wanting to remove a part of a solid. Using 3D-sketch?

I have this table leg, and I want to remove a part of it from the solid. I have made a 3d sketch directly on the curves. I assume that this is not the way to do it, wondering if any of you have an idea?

You can use the patch tool and connect the 3d sketch and make a surface, then use the split tool solid > option to remove the portion. please see attached.

There is also some residual faces on the bottom of the leg.

With a lot of your sketches being not fully defined, you are going to get a ton of unexpected results. Any accidental drag of a sketch line/point/etc. will cause your model to break.

Thanks, I'll make sure to define as much as possible.

Hi! There are multiple ways to do this. Here is one solution using Surface Modeling technique. Or you may simply create two additional 3D Sketches and include the 3D curves individually. Then create a Loft surface between the two. Use the resultant Loft surface to cut the solid body.

Many thanks!

I have worked more on this, and done a boundary patch from a 3D-drawing.
To do a split works on one side of the leg, but not on the other.
This might be because the spline of the leg is so long (each side is unique, so cannot do a mirror).

Maybe a solution is to intercept the spline in the middle somewhere, but I don't know how.

Would it be possible to intercept or split the spline, somewhere around the red X?

Please use Delete Face and Thicken tools.

Additionally, you can create a sweep in new solid mode and extend it to avoid artifacts in the form of remaining faces.

However, many of your sketches are unstable and may need to be repaired after such a change.

I rebuilt the part, redid the sketches and made all of them blocks.

Now I can't seem to manage to do split, nor the thicken/offset.

Any idea?

Hi Simon,

I took a quick look at the model. There are a few places I would do differently. Please make sure the sketch profile (sketch block) has proper constraints. Sketch 1, 2, and 4 lack tangent constraints. As a result, the edges are not smooth, which makes downstream features difficult to create. Inventor is a precise modeler. All geometry has to be precise and measurable.

Many thanks!

I went in to all the sketches, and made sure they are fully constrained.
I still cannot manage to do it though. Tried boundary patch, then split as well as thicken/offset.

Any idea?
