Using 3D annotations on parts in assembly drawings

I have a part that includes a 3D annotation that is used on an assembly.  The 3D annotation includes information that I want to see in the drawing that is created for the assembly.  I can see the text when I use the Retrieve Model Annotation tool as shown here:

The problem is that I can't figure out how to get the text to stay on the drawing.  The OK button is unavailable.  I can get the OK button to come back is I reselect the view, but then the text vanishes again.

Anyone have experience with this issue?

Hello!  What version of Inventor do you see this on?  I just tested on 2024 and it worked for me.  Could the text be off the screen or outside of your drawing border someplace?

Currently using Build 272, Release 2024.2.

When the tags I want to see are incorporated into a part inside the assembly, is when I can't bring the notations onto the drawing.  I can see them when I select the individual parts and can see where they would appear, but I don't have the option to finish by hitting the OK button.

If the notations are at the assembly level, I have no issues getting them on the drawings.

I tried zooming well outside the view but there didn't seem to be anything.

I am experiencing the same thing with a note on a specific part in an assembly.  You can select the part and see the note, but have no way to apply or complete the task.  @johnsonshiue does this sound like a bug, or is it just that we don't know the right workflow?

Hi! It should just work. I assume you have already tried window-selecting the 3D Annotation but it did not work. Please feel free to share the files in zip with me directly [email protected]. I would like to understand the behavior better.

Hi John,

Many thanks for sharing the files! I think I know where the problem is. This workflow is a bit unintuitive. To retrieve the 3D Annotation, you need to click on “Select View” button -> select the view -> click on “Select Source” button -> select the source to include the 3DA. After you are done with the selection, you need to click on the “Select Source” button again to finish selecting. Then Ok and Apply will be enabled. Please try it out and let me know if it works for you.

I had recently run into this problem and spent far too long trying to figure this one out on my own, however I did come across the solution. Is there a way we can put the having to select the source into the help file for retrieving model annotations? There are pretty step by step instructions there, but if we could add this in I know in my case this likely would have saved some time, along with the time Guthery1 had spent on this as well.

Good suggestion! Let me contact our project team to see what we can do. In the meantime, I believe AI may have learn the trick also. Autodesk Assistant, ChatGPT, and Google Gemini might be able to provide similar guidance.
