Unlock a block - Inventor 2019

Hi all,

I copied a section of my main drawing to a new drawing as a block.  Now I can add line etc., to the sketch but I cannot alter anything in the block part of the sketch.  Is there a way to unlock the block.

I think you want to Edit the Block and not Explode it.  If you do for some reason the block goes to pot.  Take a look at the Screencast ans see it it helps.

right click the block and click explode.

But, in your case it all blows up if you do.  It is because inside the block you have some vertical and horizontal constraints, and since the entire block is rotated in the sketch, when you explode it, the verticals and horizontals change directions.  Solution would be to either delete all constraints before exploding the block, or rotate the block 90 degrees before you explode it.

Hi Dave,

This is how Sketch Block works. If you want to edit the block, you can edit the block definition (double-click on the block in a sketch or in the Block folder. Please note that it will change the block definition for the specific sketch block.

Or, you can right-click on the block in the sketch -> Explode. It will dissolve the block.

Many thanks!

Hi All,

I feel such a jerk.

After looking at all your replies I went back to my file, right clicked on the block and chose Edit Block and boom, it came to life and allowed me to edit it.  Then going back to the Model, right click on the block and chose Finish Edit Block.

Maybe I need to look more deeply instead of pushing the panic button.

Thanks anyway for your collective help, much appreciated.
