Unknown server error during check-in Vault Professional 2016

Hey there, I am having trouble checking in a new file to the Vault server and hope that someone can help. We've recently set up a dedicated fileserver with Vault Server 2017, Build 22.0.56.0. However, we are using Inventor 2016, so we are also using Vault Professional 2016 Clients. Everything is running smoothly, except for one file that, when trying to check in, produces the most non-descript error messag: Unknown Server Error. The part is actually a commercial part that I downloaded as a STEP file from the suppliers homepage and imported to Inventor as an .ipt file. I tried using the 2017 Client, but that is missing the 2016 Add-In to Inventor. I had both 2016 and 2017 installed and tried using that Add-In, but to no avail. I did install the Service Pack 1 for Vault 2016 (Client) and since the server is 2017, I assume this is up to date. Anyone got any suggestions? Any help would be much appreciated. Also, sorry, I would like to post on the English board, but for some reason it doesn't offer that choice and my Spanish isn't that good either,... . Thanks, Christian

Your title states Vault Profession 2016, but its sounds like you are using Vault Pro 2017, is that correct.

Since you are using Inventor 2016, the Vault 2016 client is only needed to keep the Vault ribbon tab in INventor and AutoCAD.  You shouldn't really use it to manage files.   Always use the Vault Client for the version of Vault you have.

Have you checked the Vault logs around the time you are checking in this file?  Can you share a screen shot showing this issue?  I assume all other Inventor part files are checking in without any issues?

Hey,

the server is Vault 2017, but Inventor and the Client are 2016, so I wasn't sure which one to pick for the title. I don't have access to the log files myself, but I will ask the server team to have a look after the weekend.

I could make a screenshot, but all you'll see is information about the file name and it's position on my computer and said non-descript message: Unknown Server Error. All other files I have (yet) checked in have done so without issue.

It seems excrushiatingly wasteful and unnecessary to have two Vault Clients installed just so I have the Add-In. I have tried finding just the Add-In, but could not locate a download for just that anywhere. Do you or anyone else know where to get this? I have seen standalone downloads for Office Add-Ins in the Knowledge Database, so it seems to be possible in principle.

Thanks,

Christian

There's no separate add-in to download.  You need both client installed.

Since its only impacting this file do you have any odd values for iProperties?  Can you share this file so we can see if we can check it in.   Have you done a rebuild all on this part in Inventor?   Has this file ever been checked into Vault or are you adding it for the first time?

Hey Mark,

upon you mentioning the iProperties I went through them very carefully and found that there were some very odd characters in the title and some of these String.ToUpperCase rectangles▯.

Upon changing these to something more sensible, it checked in fine. The company is from China, so these were likely chinese characters that were not recognized and caused the problem.

Thanks for your help,

Christian
