Trying to do a fender flare

Hi, 

 

I am trying to replicate something similar to this. I am able to do the arch but not the curve that goes into say the body line of a car. if it was flat its ok but i cant make it curve at the bottom part.

 

Also see the profile for the top is slowly changing on the bottom?

 

Anyone have time to do a quick ipt file and i can follow the steps done?

Hi @kpsxtyone,

 

why would you like to do that, are you a manufacturer?
you will need many dimensions of the master model (and a lot of time)
Do you have experience in freeform?

Hi! Fender flare belongs to exterior body parts in a car. Each fender flare is unique to a given model. It is rare to model the fender flare by itself. There are sites which you can get mock-up parts on the web. Just google the term and you will get some results.

No, I am making this for my 1:10 model but I cannot figure out how to make a nice fender flare that will follow the contour

 

So i drew this extension and want to add a flare 

 

I can send the Ipt file if needed

@kpsxtyone I'm assuming you have the real car parked in the garage and making a scale model of it?

 

Otherwise creating the flare is going to be difficult to measure and draw without existing dimensions.

 

You can use 3D sketches and surfaces to approximate and then thicken, but would be easiest if you have the car.

 

If you do have the car you can get measurements by making a simplified point cloud.

 

This may sound a bit ridiculous, but have used this method many times with accurate results.

  • Draw a line parallel to the car with chalk or tape 3" from the outermost point of the car. (Blue)
  • Draw hash marks every 1". (White)
  • If you have a large cardboard box this would work best. (Brown)
  • Cut vertical line in box, draw hash marks every 1". (White)
  • Insert wood dowel, tape measure, or ruler into cut line. Have distance hash lines on dowel. (Orange)
  • Move front edge of box to parallel line, keep level and move dowel outwards to touch car fender. (Red)
  • Create a point matrix on graph paper, as you move along the x-axis mark the dowel depth.
  • Go along entire x-axis, return to front, move up 1" in y-axis, repeat.
  • Within inventor your can create a 3D Sketch, set the as points and draw a spline through them.

This may look tedious and sound strange, but works well for prototyping complex surfaces and doesn't take that long. 

 

Or you could just 3D map it and bring into ReCap Photo.

 

A bit more outside the box than you were thinking, but hope that helps!

No i dont have one 🙂

 

I just look through pictures and say add my own twist to it. Im am struggling on the having that little flare on the lip.. It doesnt need to be exact I can then adjust and learn 🙂

Hi! There should be other ways to do this. But, I think the geometry is better done by surface modeling. Please take a look at the attached part and see if it fits your requirements.

Hi! Sascha is right. There isn't a tutorial showing exactly what you need to do in any situation. The part I provided can be considered a tutorial also. To create such part, you need to have good understanding of surface modeling in Inventor. The beauty of surface modeling is that you choose where intersection happens as opposed to letting Boolean dictate where to intersect.

For this particular case, you may be able to use solid features to create the geometry (without using surface features). But, the geometry can be messy. I personally prefer surface modeling in this kind of case.
