The system cannot open the device or file specified

I had to get another computer, and re-install Inventor 2011 on Windows XP. I went through all the license application, transfer, registration, and on and on, and finally got it to work - I thought. When I tried to open an existing file, I received the message:  "ApprenticeRegSvr.exe is not currently registered and did not re-register on start up. This is probably because you do not have enough access rights (e.g. you are a restricted user). Ask an Administrator or Standard User to re run the program for you."

I tried that, and it came up as PC-1\owner, and another box, labeled as other. I selected it and entered administrator. I tried it with and without a password, and each time I was told that my name or password was incorrect. I have never used a password with Inventor, so I made one up, thinking it would accept it as a new password, or prompt me to change it. (I actually right-clicked on the icon, as my display has no start menu.)

As background, I bought a newer computer which has Windows 10, which seems to have issues with Inventor 2011. The guy who installed it for me installed a virtual hard drive which has Windows XP, and installed Inventor there. I will be going back to him with questions about printers, dual monitors, etc., but in the meantime, I cannot load an existing file on Inventor.

Autodesk suggested that I try this forum for help. Any ideas?

Thanks,

Hi Paul,

Inventor 2011 does not support Windows 10. Also it is a 9 year old product, which was released on XP. Microsoft no longer supports XP 5 years ago and stops providing updates to Window 7 recently.

I do not have any solution to install 2011 on Windows 10. Could you move up to more recent Inventor releases like 2018 or 2019? If not, your only option is probably downgrading to Window 7. Inventor 2011 can be installed and run on Windows 7 without an issue.

Many thanks!

My computer has Windows 10, but is incapable of running with Windows 7. My
IT guy installed a virtual hard drive, and loaded Windows XP on it. As far
as Inventor knows, it's running on XP.
Thanks,
Paul

It sounds like you don't have full admin rights to your machine and the Inventor software never properly registered with the operating system.  Inventor itself does not need an account and/or password to start but you must have full read/write rights to your machine based on your Windows user account.   Not sure if this work or not for 2011  but you could try these steps

Use the following steps to re-register Autodesk Inventor with your operating system:

1.  Exit Inventor if still running

2.  Select the Windows start button and under the run command (Windows start menu)

3.  When CMD or command prompt appears in the list, right mouse click and select run as admin

4.  When the command prompt appears, navigate using dos commands to C:\Program Files\Autodesk\Inventor <version>\Bin or where your Inventor.exe is located if you changed the default install location of Inventor.

In this example I'm navigated to my Inventor 2018 (exe) location.

6.  Type Inventor.exe /install.

Wait a few mins and restart Inventor.   At this time you will not see anything occurring.  Don't panic.  Smiley Very Happy  However if you launch Windows task manager you can watch the Inventor.exe process (and see when it ends).

Does that resolve the issue?

I finally was able to meet with my IT guy and resolve* some* issues. I am
able to open and run Inventor, but am still unable to print or to use my
second monitor. These are issues with the virtual hard drive I'm using, and
I'm sure they will eventually be resolved.

Thank you for all your help and patience.
