Template File Error

Good Morning All,

I created 3 template drawing files for fabrication and assemblies with all texts, dimensions and everything else saved in the default style editors.  Every time I start a new drawing selecting from my template folder I get this message attached and all my fonts and some settings are no longer there.  Can you please tell me what this message means and how to fix this problem.  Many thanks in advance.

Patrick

There are 3 locations for Style Library:

1) Default Location: Design Data Folder, complete Styles

2) Template, complete Styles

3) Any other Inventor Files: ipt, iam, idw, partial Styles

The error message is saying the Style in the file you are editing is different then the Style in Default Location.

A quick fix is save the change to Default Library by select "Save Style to Style Library".

This will remove conflict on that computer.  Everyone else opening you file will have the conflict again.

It is because you modified the Standard ANSI Library.  For each Template you changed the Style, it is a modified copy of the Default.  You will never get rid of the error message.

The best solution is create a new Standard based on ANSI (or ISO, whichever you want to use), ie Company Name ANSI.

For each style you change: Dimension, Balloon, Layer, Text etc, create a new one before you change it.  I created new one for every styles so nothing is share with Default ANSI Standard.

Make sure the new standard use the new styles then "Save Style to Style Library".

Now you have 2 complete Styles: one in Style Library, one in Template.

If you use different Styles in different Templates, you should create new Standard for each.

It is a long and painful way but once its done, you'll have a proper company standard you can share from the Template file.  It will also survive Inventor update, since updating Inventor will force you to use the new updated Default Style Library.  Unless you have changed the folder.

I would recommend that you review the following 2 articles before making any decisions in how to correct your style conflict message:

ARTICLE #1: https://synergiscadblog.com/2015/09/15/styles-conflict-inventor-drawings/

ARTICLE #2: https://synergiscadblog.com/2015/10/20/avoiding-style-conflicts-completely-inventor-drawings/

You also may want to review this AU2017 class that @cbenner and I did: http://au.autodesk.com/au-online/classes-on-demand/class-catalog/classes/year-2017/inventor/im118896#chapter=0

I have already wasted hours and hours of my employer's time trying to resolve this issue.  I have read or watched every single article, post, video, cave painting, etc. and have not found a single coherent explanation for how to fix this.  As usual, Autodesk Help is as helpful as a sharp stick in the eye.  For the record:

Yes, my project is set to Read-Write. (I am the only user)

Yes, I have created a new standard with custom styles

Yes, I have changed my Object Defaults for that Standard

Yes, I have "Saved and Updated" my changes

Yes, I have gone into Tools/Application Options and confirmed my folders for Default Templates and Design Data

Yes, I have toggled "Local Styles" and "Active Standard" to no effect.

Really, I'm done.  Please don't point me to another vague, useless post promising a solution (it doesn't exist).  I'm only posting to express my frustration at how this SHOULD be a simple fix, but isn't, because Autodesk (again - sharp stick in the eye).  This is the only software I know where "save" means " don't save".  And "update" means "don't update".  The issue isn't preventing me from working.  It is only preventing me from working efficiently.  I will simply live with the conflict message and update my styles every single time for every single drawing I create going forward.  Super inefficient, but it will probably waste less time than trying to find a clear, simple explanation (that actually works) for how to fix the problem.  Thanks for listening!

MY solution worked.

Took about a month to get it.

Most of the problem was material.

@Anonymous

Since you didn't give us details to hopefully avoid a potentially incorrect answer I'll just start with the simple explanation workflow that may work for your situation..

If the styles in your template are the one you intend to use

1-simply open the template file (open the actual template file, do not start a new file using that template) and

2-go to the Manage Tab and press the "Save" button in the Styles and Standard section of the ribbon.

3-When that dialog comes up select the "Yes to All" button and then the "Ok" button to save all template styles to the style library.

4-Then save and close the template..

5-Now start a new file using that template..

Is the error dialog box gone? (it should be... if not there are specific details that we need to know to be able to help you properly)..

There is a simple fix and Autodesk is not out to poke you in the eye..  The system itself though is quite powerful and there are a few things you need to understand to work with it efficiently.

As mentioned, already far too much time wasted.  Happy it's working for you guys.  I am not a stupid person.  I have a post-secondary school education.  I have been using CAD software for most of my adult life (30+ years).  The mere fact that I am apparently unable to comprehend in any way, shape or form how to fix this problem simply illustrates how Autodesk has failed completely at explaining clearly how their own software works.  And dozens of posts and articles by so-called expert users all similarly fail at explaining it so that a six-year old could figure it out.  I guess I am simply too stupid to be using this software (yet smart enough to find a workaround).  Life's too short for this amount of aggravation.  I appreciate the attempts at help, but none has made any difference.  Just gonna live with it.

@Anonymous  Sorry you feel that way...  I'll give it one more try 🙂

Does this simplistic explanation help?

That dialog is simply stating the following issue..

You created a template and the styles setup in that file are different from your style library.

The dialog then gives you two solutions depending on if your style library data is what you want to use or if whats in your template is what you want to use..

1-Delete the matching named styles in the style library (or Update the style library with the definitions from the template)

or

2-Update the templates named styles with the definitions from the style library.

Thats it... Nothing more to it..

You're not stupid.

Also a 6 years will not be able to figure it out.

This need some time to figure out how Style and material works in Inventor.

The change in material library on 2012? caused this "problem".

I think I end up removed all materials and recreate them.

Part of the problem is when copy a material, it create a copy of property and appearance.

And you should change them to correct one.

I use IV since R1.  Took me a month trial to get it done.

Result is a much cleaner template.

Yes, it should be easier.

Start with a file with no Style and material.

You need to fix all the templates: ipt, iam, ipn, idw.

Hi! I have to agree with you that it indeed a very annoying warning message. There is absolutely room for improvement. The workflow was originally designed for CAD admins so regular users don't have to deal with the tasks of setting up templates. But, we have more and more users having to set up templates themselves.

Another possibility of the warning is due to a bug exposed by recent Windows updates. Please take a look at the following article and see if it makes a difference.

Hello,

I got another error message, the one that pops up in different window.

It says that Title block can not create font SWIsop1. ( see my attachment)

I understand it but just can not find the text where in my title block is that font used.

I clicked on every word and all show either Arial or Tahoma fonts.

Is there any easy fix for this, like update all fonts in my title block?

This error is consuming my time and making me mad.

After this message, I used to get similar message like OP showed but I migrated template and updated styles so it disappeared.

thanks

Select the text.  If they're same font, it'll show.  If not, change it.

Sometime, you got a space or at the beginning or end with different font.

That's after someone edit it.

Thanks,

It was exactly what happened.

I spent two long hours on it but it was worth it.

Now I can use my template directly.

Thank you very much.
