Hi! You may change the default surface color in the Color Scheme Editor. Go to Tools -> App Options -> Colors -> Customize Schemes -> Design -> Other -> Workplane. Change the default color to something more distinctive.
Please note that the change will apply to the Workplane color and surface body color.
