Suddenly all projected geometry is locked.

Hi all, 

I am working on a large platform using frame generator. 

Different elements of the platform (railing, posts, braces etc) will all be assembled with bolted connections.

As such, where there's a bolted connection I am projecting geometry from a connection plate onto the frame generated beam for bolt hole locations.

90% of the time this works great, as it was all day yesterday. I project the hole from the plate onto a sketch on the beam and the projected geometry is adaptive.

This morning, when I follow the exact same work flow, the projected geometry is locked. The sketches I did yesterday are still adaptive.

Is there a reason for this? Can I do anything to ensure the projected geometry is adaptive?

Hi! I suspect the "projection" is between an assembly sketch and a part sketch. Or between assembly sketches. Inventor assembly sketches are meant to create assembly features within the hosting assembly. Any cross-level projection leads to grounded geometry. Please feel free to share the files here. The forum experts can help understand the issue better.

Tools > Application Options > Assembly - see the two "Cross part geometry projection" options.  They should both be selected.

 

Or... Did you by any chance have the Ctrl key pressed when clicking to project?  Holding the Ctrl key prevents adaptivity.

No, I double click the frame generated beam to edit it, create a sketch on the relevant face and project a parts feature, in this case a hole, onto the frame generated member. I do this all the time and its fine then out of nowhere Inventor changes its behaviour to project the feature as locked. I cant figure out why.

Hi, both of those have always been selected. As I said above, this is a workflow I follow all the time and 90% of the time it works as expected. Not holding CTRL either.

I’m experiencing the same issue described previously. Is there a resolution to this?

Here’s the situation: both boxes are checked, I’m not holding Ctrl, and I’m editing a part within an assembly while projecting another part’s geometry. However, the projected lines, arcs, and circles are locked. How can I project geometry without it being locked?

I expect the sketch to be adaptive—that’s the purpose of wanting the projected geometry unlocked. I don’t believe sharing parts is necessary; this is a straightforward question: How can I create projected geometry in an assembly that isn’t locked?

Additionally, when working in a single-part environment, if I create a sketch and project geometry from an earlier feature, the geometry is not locked or fixed. It appears in yellow with the "projected geometry" constraint for the specific line or curve. How can I achieve this same functionality when creating adaptive parts in an assembly?

Hi Daniel,

 

Inventor assembly sketch does not support the adaptivity. Only certain type of geometry can be projected associatively in an assembly sketch. Please share an example here. I can take a look and see if the behavior is expected.
