Step file to derived part.

Hi, I have step file here that I want to derive into a single part, so I can use it for representational modelling. The problem is, when I go to derive the part, a couple of the parts within the step file don't come through. I have had the same trouble with a step file in the past, but I just gave up on that one and used it as an assembly. When I derive I get three errors of "Modelling failure in ASM. Redefine inputs.". I have tried converting them all to .ipt files but the same thing happens.
The File is too big to attach, and I can't send stuff to FTP sites it seems on the company network. You can download it from here http://www.3dcontentcentral.com/parts/browse/Compute rs/User -Library/88/88/Models/download-part.asp... if you have a log in. Any ideas? INV2008 SP3

Go to the Autodesk newsgroup link on the home page.

Your link to 3D content central doesn't work.
Can you give some more details of what part you were trying to download?

Try this link http://www.3dcontentcentral.com/secure/download-mode l.aspx?catalogid=171&id=740. Make sure there are no spaces added to the address. The newsgroup seems to add them sometimes.

Information on the model is:

- Title: Cordless Mouse

- Description: Cordless Mouse

- Category: Computers Miscellaneous

- Catalog: User Library

- By: Matt Lombard

- Company: Tri-Mech Solutions

Thanks for your efforts.

Here's a couple of posts with zip files. Probably not supposed to do this, but anyway. Put them all into one folder and it should work.
First of three posts with attachments. This is the inventor files of the mouse. These don't derive either. Two parts won't come through for me.

The forum server software, I guess, is inserting spaces in the link making
it unusable without cleanup.

There is one extraneous part in the sub assy that may be causing your
merge attempt to fail but merging multiple bodies with slightly complex
surfaces can always be a tricky proposition. I would, barring a good
reason not to, simply use it as an assembly. If I had a need to make a
single part from that I would copy necessary exterior surface and fill
in the blanks to enclose a volume (probably omitting some of the finer,
such as fillets, details). A 'shrink wrap' function may give a good
'starter' surface set.

I just had a chance to download shrinkwrap and try it. Trouble with it is the first step is a type of derive component. The output is the same as a normal derive component. The derived part is missing come of the original parts.

Another interesting thing that I have just noticed is sometimes the derived component misses the top half and the button cap, and then other times it is missing the top half and the two buttons. It seems it is always missing the top half and the button cap when deriving directly from the step file, but there is no definite output from deriving from the inventor files saved from the step files. Derive all individually into single ipt as Body as Work Surfaces. Send to CE. Untrim button cap surfaces. Edit as needed and Sculpt. Is this for a school project? Have you considered starting from scratch?

I downloaded the STEP file from 3D Content Central. The file
opened in IV2009 with most parts creating good base parts along with a surface.
However, some parts are missing geometry. I then opened the Solidworks version
files in IV2009 and they imported fine. You might try installing the 2008
Translators from http://labs.autodesk.com
and see if IV2008 can open them. On 3D Content Central, you will want to
download the SW2006 version for IV 2008 translators.

Were you able to derive them into a single part as the original post was trying to achieve?

Dennis mentioned to download version SW2006, but 3DContentcentral has earliest version of SW2007, so I downloaded it and tried it. It worked better than expected. I was able to derive into a single part also, even retaining part colours/textures. Thanks for your efforts guys. Your a great help on these groups. I'm also going to try JD's method so that I can use it later on if needed.
