Split does not allow face to be used as tool

I think that I should be able to use a face as the split tool but SPLIT only allows me to select a plane as the tool.

SPLIT instruction here at step 4 say "Select a 2D sketch, 3D sketch, work plane, or surface to be used as the Split Tool."

Here is the behaviour that I see in Inventor 2022

Am I correct that I should be able to use a face for the split tool. If so, why won't Inventor allow me to select a face?

Are you using a surface or a solid body face?

You need to create a sketch line, extrude that as a surface and use that as the tool.

Hi Folks,

Just a minor correction. You don't need to extrude a sketch as a surface to split a face. You can select a 2D or 3D curve as a split tool. As a split tool, a 2D sketch will split the face in sketch normal direction. For 3D sketch, the curve has to be lying on top of the face.

Many thanks!

It would be useful if I could select a flat face as my tool so that I don't need to create a new plane on that face just to perform a split. I think I will suggest this as an improvement.
