Specifying opened window size (registry?)

Like many others, I have a multiple monitor setup.

I was wondering if there is a way, possibly in the registry, to specify the size of the window that opens whenever I open a file or start a new one.

Right away, the window always seems to default to maximized, but if I could specify a number of pixels, that would be awesome.

Do you mean you open a file from Windows Explorer and a new instance of Inventor opens, and you want to control the size of that window?

Or, you have Inventor running, and open a file from within Inventor, and want to control the size of the sub-window the file opens in?

Gotcha 🙂 it would be nice if there were a way to do this. Personally I've found working with those sub-windows as anything but maximized to be very tricky and unpredictable.

I too would like more control over my window arrangement, particularly when it comes to multiple monitors. That's why I created this idea in the IdeaStation requesting the ability to have multiple full windows open 🙂

But if someone knows of a way to control the sub-window opening location and size via the registry, that would be a very imperfect but useful workaround in the meantime.

I tend to have the windows 8 calculator docked on my screen at all times, and I don't want the new window maximized across two screens because the middle portion of the window spans two flat panel frames which is a completely useless deadzone to me. It is seriously impractical.

I know the location is stored here: Hkey_Current_User\Software\Autodesk\Inventor\RegistryVersion<  >\System\Preferences\Dialog\ in the registry.  But you need a registry comparison software to determine which entry belongs to what dialog.

For example: "dm2d7b" belongs to the extrude dialog...

Any idea which is the window frame?

Sorry that's the only one I know at the moment (Extrude Dialog)..   Had a case where it got moved off the screen and the normal ALT+Spacebar method wouldn't work.

I did a quick registry compare just using Excel and it doesn't appear that changing the location of a sub-window has an affect on any of the registry keys in that location. I closed all but a single sub-window, took a registry snapshot, closed Inventor, took a snapshot, opened Inventor, opened a single sub-window, put it at a different location and size than before, closed Inventor, and took a snapshot. There was no difference in the registry for any of the snapshots. Maybe because we're dealing with a window and not a dialog box?

But now that I think about it, it doesn't make sense that there would be a key for this, because there would have to be a key for however many sub-windows you have open in a session, right? There might be a key which determines the initial opening location for new sub-windows, though. But I'm not sure how you'd find it.

I found a temporary solution due to the desktop I use having an nVidia display with nView installed.

If you right click on the window, and go to nView options -> Individual Settings -> Edit and make sure that "Enable Child window spanning across multiple displays" is OFF, then it works as I'd prefer.

I'd honestly just like to have a solution no matter what hardware is in the system.

At one point in time in Windows if you Shift+close (the red X) it was supposed to store the last position. I don't know if that works with Windows 8 or not.

Interesting... Inventor has crashed on me twice while trying to change this setting.

And that's three... I guess I'm destined to never experience this nice functionality you've found 😕
