Sheet metal lofted flange problem

Hi,

 

Apologies in advance for the noob question - am pretty new to Inventor...!

I'm trying to draw and develop a sheet metal mould part in two pieces, an inner (Part 1a) and outer (Part 1b) that will be welded together to form the finished part. The outer part lofts correctly but when the inner fails when I try the same thing - what am I doing wrong???

I see the problem. Your asking it to create a part that combines itself when flat. To make the inner cone, take and make the arc longer and then fold them back so it comes out w/o overlap of material. Another way is to add a bend after you sketch the face of the flange you want. Hi! Please refrain from apologizing! There is nothing wrong with asking any question related to Inventor. Though this case looks simple, it can be tricky particularly for beginners. It isn't apparent why it does not work.

Inventor as a CAD system isn't that smart. You will need to set up the conditions which it was designed for, to get the desirable geometry. In this case, you will need to do one of the followings.

 

1) Add rounds at the corners in the sketches.

2) Or, add linear extension line on either end of the arc. Then draw the horizontal lines.
