Set parts in sub-assembly to reference in specific upper level assembly.

I want to be able to set the BOM structure of parts in a sub-assembly to reference but only in a specific upper level assembly. We have a common sub-assembly that we manufacture in house and keep in stock as that sub-assembly, when we want to use this sub-assembly we only call up the part number for the sub-assembly in our BOM's and not the individual parts within that sub-assembly. We need to keep the BOM structure of the part as normal so that in the drawings etc for that sub-assembly they appear in the parts list etc., however when using that sub-assembly in a higher level assembly I only want to reference the sub-assembly part number and not all the parts in that sub-assembly.  Is there a way to do this?

Many thanks in advance.

Hi Timothy,

This should be easily doable. There are a few ways to do that. You can simply open the subassembly itself and go to Tools -> Doc Settings -> BOM -> change BOM Structure to Inseparable. Now, the subassembly by default will be one row (none of the components within the subassembly will show up at top-level BOM).

Another way to do it is to use Structured BOM view at top-level. But, it means you will only list first-level components (with the ability to expand to sub levels). Also, you may not be using Structured BOM view anyway. I think setting "Inseparable" is a better solution.

Many thanks!

Thank you for your response @johnsonshiue . Unfortunately from what I can tell changing the BOM structure to inseparable only affects the parts-only BOM and not the structured BOM, and I am using the structured BOM.  I have also considered your second option but as I have several other sub-assemblies, that I do want to show all the parts from these sub-assemblies in the BOM, then I don't think that option will work either.

Hi Timothy,

I see the issue now. I think you are using Structured -> All Levels BOM. Setting the subassembly to Inseparable does not help here. I guess you will need to collapse or expand the subassembly node on the BOM table in order to control the level display. "Inseparable" does not help unfortunately.

Many thanks!

@johnsonshiuethank you for your response. Unfortunately when you export the BOM to excel then it exports everything even if the tree is colapsed.  Sounds like I will just need to manual remove the parts once I have exported to excel.

Thanks again..
