Self intersecting loop problems

I've seen a lot of these on here, but none of them are helping.

I'm trying to create a wheel for a class at school, but every time I try to revolve the highlighted part as a surface it doesn't work, saying "Self intersecting paths or loops are invalid for this operation."

The troubling part is highlighted in light blue.

Welcome to the Autodesk User's Community..

When posting and sharing files it's important to indicate what version of Inventor you're using..  In your case its Inventor 2017.  However the file was original created in Inventor 2012.  So most likely you didn't create the original geometry did you?

In addition do you understand what self intersecting loop means..  Look at your sketch..  With in a couple of seconds I can see this

It looks like your just projecting geometry from the existing revolve functions.

No, I did not create it myself.

I found it online and downloaded it so I could figure out how to make a wheel that was similar.

The area you have highlighted is not the area I'm attempting to revolve.  What I'm trying to revolve, is that line that is highlighted in light blue in the picture.

So, how can I change it so that I can revolve the part, similar to the other part that is revolved all the way around?

The problem is in your sketch, where there is a duplicate shorter line over the longer one-- see below.  Once this is deleted, you can revolve this profile without a problem.
