Selecting 3d sketches in the loft feature

I'm trying to use loft to cut out gear teeth, but it won't let me select the 3d sketches for the sections. I attached the .ipt file.

Hi @rgailey84, Welcome to the community.

I've asked the site moderators to move your post to the Inventor forum where it will be seen by other Inventor users, who can assist with the question about your model.

The inventor forum is bit more difficult to find recently, due to the layout on this site changing, but for the future you can bookmark this link:
https://forums.autodesk.com/t5/inventor-forum/bd-p/78

Or use the drop down as shown here:

Hope that helps,

Curtis

Hi!

You can not have several loft profiles in the same sketch.
Also, the 3D sketch has an odd behavior, so i suggest to use sketch 2D (based in the 3D Sketch projected geometry) to make the loft, selecting each profile:

Hi! These 3D splines are indeed problematic. Somehow they cannot be consumed by any of the Inventor features (Boundary Patch, Ruled Surface, and Loft).

Just to clarity the behaviors, there isn't anything wrong with picking multiple 3D sketch geometry within the same 3D Sketch. You can pick as many as you want inside or outside of a sketch.

Another limitation is that the 3D Sketch geometry is not allowed to create a Solid Loft, particularly at the start or the end (Ok in-between). It is because there isn't a capping face associated with 3D loop. As a result, Inventor does not know how to fill the holes. Please take a look at the attached part.

Many thanks!

Creating lofts using profiles from the same 3D sketch it's possible in same cases, but most of times isn't, even in simple cases... and that's why i suggest using profiles from different/separated 3D sketches...

Hi Carlos,

Did you notice that the output body type was set to Solid, not Surface in your case? I think it will work if the output body type is set to Surface.

Many thanks!
