Rotated section view. Drafting party foul?

Occasionally I'll have a section view through an assembly at a strange angle...or vertical when horizontal would fit better on the sheet etc.

I'll rotate the view to better fit the page (or just be in an ortho position...not at a 45 if my section was at a 45).

Through literally thousands of drawings and hundreds of customers, I've never had anyone comment. We've got one now that's really putting their foot down about view positions.

Is this actually a thing I've been blissfully unaware of all these years or are these guys picking the fly s*** out of the pepper so to speak?

Personally, the only problem i've had with this sort of thing is if the drawing is supposed to be drawn in third angle projection, but the projected views are being dragged to the other side of the base view.

This can be very misleading to the engineer reading the drawing as it's not actually showing third angle projection.

I'm sure there's some standards that talk about this sort of thing, but i'm not entirely sure if it's a proper legal requirement.

That's understandable. This is definitely not the case, just a clearly marked section view rotated to fit in a void on the sheet instead of creating and entire new sheet to fit it.

Hello @jyager I think it depends on if the customer is required by a certain standard depending on their accreditation. For instance, I worked at a place that had ISO9000 and Mil-Spec requirements and they had their own setups.

I think it really depends on the manufacturing method. For instance on an electrical contact it would be misleading showing the part vertical or with the second operation on the other side depending on which way the machine is accessed by the user for setup.

I would assume that if there were orientation identifying marks needed they would be stated explicitly, ie Top Side, Front.

If what they want you to do makes no sense then I would probably also be puzzled, been there too. I drew it both ways and showed them which one I preferred and explained why. That didn't go over too well so I would be cautious to recommend it!

Hi

I have been waiting for a client to complain, but everything has been acceptable thus far.

Here is an example of a drawing view label that I made just this morning. Sometimes you just have to tweak things to make them look better. (When in doubt I always double up with a shaded iso view) There was no other way to show everything, and I did not want to detail the view "Upside down"
