Rotate part/assembly by holding down right mouse button

After a computer reinstallation I also installed Inventor 2016 instead of 2015. Everything was working fine, however I thought that in my old Inventor installation holding down my right mouse button and moving the mouse around rotated my part.

I'm not completely sure, but it seems that it was so obvious to me that in my new installation I'm constantly pressing/holding my right mouse button and moving around in order to rotate my part. Only thing that comes up right now is a useless blue line from which I constantly active stuff from the right mouse menu.

Was this really a (standard) option in a previous Inventor release or am I just crazy for thinking I really used my mouse this way to rotate stuff. Can't find it around on the internet as well.

Your crazy Smiley Tongue.

Rotate (Orbit) is shift and hold down middle mouse button

Best thing you will ever do is get a 3d controller like a 3d connexion space pilot/navigator,etc..

It makes 3D SOOOOOOOO much better/faster,etc...

Agreed. You're crazy. Smiley Wink Unless there was some setting to change that, which I missed.

I am currently on IV2015 (will hopefully upgrade today) and shift is the orbit toggle for me. Although, as mentioned above, a 3D mouse is the way to go. It was a small learning curve, but now I feel ridiculously impaired without it. I prefer the full space explorer.

On a sidenote I know some older 3D PDFs and other 3D viewers have used RMB as orbit. Current versions I believe RMB has been standardized as zoom. LMB orbits and both buttons will pan. Feel free to correct me if I am wrong. But in full 3D modeling programs I have never seen RMB orbit and I am familiar with Inventor, Pro/E (Creo), and Siemens SolidEdge.

I think I know where this was coming from. I wasn't using Inventor for a while, but I was using another program where rotating around assemblies was necessary and there holding the right mouse button and moving around was actually working. I think I reprogrammed my brain a bit and was a bit frustrated that this wasn't working in Inventor.

I think it would be a great feature for normal mouse users, because it's really intuitive. I'm not using the right mouse button swipe anyway, only a static click to enable the menu so it won't interfere with each other.

What was the other program?

Not really a program, a game called Kerbin Space Program. You have to build rockets in a kind of assembly type of environment. Holding down the right mouse button and moving it around does rotate the spacecraft. However, I do think it's a nice intuitive way to quickly rotate around your stuff.

How would you do the window select or crossing window select?

What do you mean with window select? You mean the pop-up window when you click your right mouse button? Or the selection window with your left mouse button?

The only function hold-and-move your right mouse button has right now is select something blind from the right mouse button menu, which I personally never used.

I'm having the same problem I explicitly did not have any other programs back when I started using inventor and I always used the RMB to look  around and now that weve got the useless line I cant do that anymore.

Hi, this has always been middle mouse as long as I can remember.

Personally I have always used right button for pan/rotate, but I use a program to switch the middle and right buttons as I find it more comfortable to use.

I use this one, it's not endorsed by Autodesk in any way, it's just the one I have always used personally and there are other programs out there that will do it.

Hi! If you don't like the Marking Menu, you can disable it. Go to View -> User Interface -> uncheck "Marking Menu."

Many thanks!
