Rotate Model with Middle Mouse Button

Anonymous
Not applicable

I've been researching this all day and I can't find anything that works for me.  Is there a way to change the middle mouse button from "Pan" to "Rotate" my model?  Currently, I hold "Shift" while holding down the middle mouse button and that rotates my model.  Can I incorporate that into my middle mouse button somehow without having to buy a 3D Connexion mouse?

I do not have a space mouse. Just using the Logitech G600 with the Logitech driver.

OR they could just add the feature in with the understanding that it would assist those in transition from other software, with the understanding that it will help gain market share. Telling a customer to go buy a fancy 3D controller or go install some 3rd party software is absolutely ridiculous. It's almost as annoying as having to project geometry every time I want to sketch on a part.

Can you program the Shift+middle mouse button in the driver software op the Logitech G600? With the driver software of the Cadmouse this was not possible. Thats why I switched to the free Xmouse driver.

You are right but to change this you need a lot of Kudo's on the Inventor Ideas forum. In the meantime, the free Xmouse software is a good and simple alternative. Of course, you don't need an expensive Cadmouse. A cheap multi button mouse will also work perfectly with the Xmouse software. Regarding the “project geometry” I agree. I am used to Solidworks where it works much easier. Maybe you can start post on the Inventor Ideas forum about this. You first Kudo will be from me!!!

I work with both Inventor (Mouse + 3D Connexion Mouse) and Solidworks (Mouse) everyday. I am used to using both hands for Inventor and 1 hand for SW, and I am always amazed that I HAVE to use 2 hands in Inventor to do the same thing in Solidworks that only requires 1 hand. I use Solidworks on the train, at a coffee shop, on the couch, etc..., and always think about how I would not be able to use Inventor in the same environment.

Awesome thanks heaps. Pity they can't get this right on their own. You would think they would make it easy to customise the navigation if they want to win solid-works users.

Just thought Id throw in my 2 cents, I've come from learning SolidWorks in Uni, CATIA at work and now shifting to Inventor.

As per previous posts, I've found using X-Mouse to be a perfect solution for how I want to use my mouse to navigate.

The way I have it set up is with the middle button reconfigured to rotate as per previous posts while also having the Right mouse button set up with a chord so that it will Pan if I click the middle button straight after holding the right button down:image.png

Not sure if this will help anyone but thought I'd share!

You should look at the 3D Motion Controllers from 3dConnexion.com , you'll forget about middle button on your mouse.

I've been using them since 2006 with Inventor.

Thanks for the reply, I use a SpacePilot at work, its a great tool but it's quite bulky for when I'm on the move and using my laptop.

Realistically though, why should you need to go and buy 3rd party hardware to achieve something that CAN be done in a natural, sensical manner solely with the mouse? I think there is a need for these cad packages to have the model view manipulation handled within the mouse as opposed to having to use two hands, even if that is just a matter of holding down shift, it's inefficient and annoying.

Frankly, I'd like to see all CAD packages incorporate the option to self manage the configuration of the mouse instead of having it locked and forcing users to use 3rd party apps/devices.

In regards to the picture, I thought I had inserted it and that's how it shows in my browser?

I keep a "Space Traveler" in my laptop bag when I'm out of the office as well.

That would be up to the mouse manufacture to supply drivers for the software not the software to supply drivers for the mouse.

The inset photos, is just part of my signature.

This is a nice addition to keep the panning feature. (I disabled X-mouse with the sroll-lock when I needed panning)

Any suggestion about the 3Dconnexion mouse in this thread should be ignored, as stated in the original question and several answers already: it is a must have for inventor but this thread handles a solution WITHOUT the 3D mouse

Greetings to the forum participants!

It's been 7 years now, has the Autodesk made it customizable?

Is the feature accessible through macro?

I have a station and a couple of laptops I work with, cannot transfer the space pads every time.

Thank you.

This is functionality is processed by the mouse drivers and software supplied by the mouse manufacture and not Inventor.

Any mapping of Inventor functions to a mouse button are again handled by the mouse manufactures software.

Either buy something like an X-Mouse as posted a few line items higher up and map the middle button as shown or the cheapest 3dConnexion SpaceMouse Compact for $129.00US. You might check on eBay for a used one.

X-Mouse Button Control can be used for free, even for commercial use.

I've wrote a detailed guide for installations & configuration several posts up (#42)

and if you scroll through you can find how other people configure their mouse by making use of extra buttons for rotation or combining multiple buttons for panning 🙂

If you don't want the wheel to do this task, and use the left click instead, these are the tags:

1. Select Left Button

2. {SHIFT}{MMB}{UP} {DOWN} {LEFT} {RIGHT}

Hi RCampbellE999V,

Could you tell me how to do this please?  I have tried many of the tips in this thread (without using X-mouse) but as yet on my G600 I cannot press down one button, rotate while it is down, then release to carry on.

Thanks,
Janek
