Renaming origin planes

I am working on a task to add some consistency to existing models. The models are all similar, basically a cube with a door. The door plane being the "front" might be parallel with the XY plane, which is what I want, or it might be parallel with the XZ plane.

Is there any reason I cannot just rename the original XZ plane as XY Plane and redefine "Front" on the view cube?

I plan to use iLogic to create constraints to the origin planes across multiple assemblies. Example of what I plan instead of recreating the actual constraints themselves. Is there any way to rearrange the newly named Origin planes so they appear in the same order as a non-renamed assembly?

Hi!

You can't change the Origin Planes, this is fixed in any 3D software... but you can set any view to a plane.

 

You have several ways to do it...

 

------Changing the file or the template:

Don't forget to save the changes: "Save as a Template" to maintain the same directions in the next new files.

 

-----Locally, in a open file, you can change the front (or top) view to match a plane(or any direction you can select).

I will add that the initial planes/axes are the starting point for the orientation of all other elements and the "base" of the orientation in the virtual world inside the program, and their mutual position is defined by the generally accepted international standard of the Cartesian coordinate system.

 

If you want to change the orientation of the assembly, you must change the constraints.

You can set the planes orientation according to the instructions by @CCarreiras

Move your view.

Move your part.

Don't move the world.

 

You can rename the planes:

As others have stated, it is not possible to redefine the origin work features.  It is possible to redefine the view cube.

 

I took a different approach and renamed the origin planes in our templates about 15 years ago.

 

In our world:
XY was renamed to Front,

XZ was renamed to Top

YZ was renamed to Right

 

This matches the default view cube in the default templates from Autodesk.

 

We tend to position models so that they match the real-world view and that the view cube is the direction that a view is looking at the model.  The back face of the view cube is the trunk/boot of a car, the top face is looking down at the roof of a car, etc.

The whole system is stable - the planes have standardized mutual relations, and additionally their names come from the axes.

If they are to be consistent, you have to change all of them - that means you will go back to the beginning.

 

This is a flawed philosophy - it is not about the software, but about understanding the nature of the subject.

 

However, there is no difficulty in changing the orientation (Top, Right, etc.) in the orientation of individual planes in the program settings (I think you have to save it as a template), as a @CCarreiras showed.

99% of the time only the final assembly need to line up to some planes.
We can't model all the parts in their assembled coordinate.  Think nuts and bolts.

 

So 99% of the time I don't care where I start modeling.
Earth is round anyway.  Your up is not my up.

Earth is round.... but... when you create the part drawing (or an ipn, or a render, etc), you have to be rotating the part to find the "front " views that fits you better.
If you do that at the beginning, you just have to place the part in the drawing and that´s it, is well positioned and orientated.

Also, if you implement an automatism to do drawings, your front view will be always random, so you will have to open again all the drawings and correct the "front" view you need, which is different from the initial  3D front.

 

It's better to spend a few seconds at the beginning to chose the proper view, then keep waste time in the future.

Of course that parts like nut's and bolts it doesn't matter much, but all the other parts (and mainly the assembly) is very important, and what @swalton refer is the best and most professional way to the the job.

 

Your world will keep round, but with a lot more time to enjoy it 🙂

I might should clarify. These parts already exist and are used in multiple places. I am simply trying to get them consistent; It would have been nice if we did that from the start, but unfortunately I was not here at the start. It would be one thing if the housing were constrained to itself; but random parts are constrained to the origin; so there are no telling the number of constraints I will need to modify. Looks like I have no other choice.

Replacing one sub-assembly with another in context of a larger top-level. They are all the same with varying size differences and internal components. Replacing one with another should be simple. Plus I am now creating 3D automation that needs to place and constrain these sub-assemblies. We will also be introducing drawing automation.

@CCarreiras has already written about this. Automation requires preparation.

If someone has not thought through all the aspects and has made mistakes in the way of modeling, these mistakes should be corrected.

 

Changing the name in the browser is only a Label, not a Property. The nature of the coordinate system remains unchanged (look at the axes in the lower left corner of the workspace). 

Even though the Earth is round, you can't sail from India to the USA and change the meridian numbers halfway there.

Although you can overwrite labels during operation (force the operator to change their impressions) - you will not change the true orientation towards the algorithm and the nominal (objective) orientation.

Therefore, understanding the nature of things is more important than the name of the function in the program.

 

Some manual work awaits you.

I use Master Sketch, so most parts will be where ever they need to be.

View Rep could help.

Using master sketch is nothing more than a global coordinate system, so your other comments are not consistent with your practices; and the suggestions derived from them do not solve or address the main problem of this topic.
