Is there something to array about, an axis. If not you may have to create
the axis.

OK so here's a gif of what I did. I created an additonal solid cylinder.
Inserted an axis. Chose that as my "axis direction" and this is what I
ended up with. I inderstand the i have to turn off visiblity of the
cylinder. Does this sound like the corect procedure to use to generate this
pattern??

If it get the result you're after ... yes.

You might want to think about using a work axis as the axis for rotation. But it comes down to personal preference and
circumstances.

You could have used the assy orgin planes to constraint your first assy off from. Then use the assy orgin axis to pattern your assy. That way you would not need that center round part you made.
