Is there any way I can unlock teh primary view representation? Or alter the object visablity in this view representation?

I 100% agree with @b_ruijter. Locking the [Primary] Representation in Assemblies can be super annoying !!!

I also use iLogic to make sure every component used in the Assembly is set to a different and not locked View Representation. However, very often (maybe always?) when an update is made across the main assembly, for some odd reason, subassemblies will *flash* the [Primary] Representation. Then I have to again refresh the View Representations code or go Manage -> Rebuild all. WHY?

Here is an example. I use a surface part (cream colored here) in various subassemblies to help with constraints etc. This part's BOM is set to "Reference" and in every other Representation is hidden / not visible. But I obviously cannot chance that in the [Primary] representation.

Very very often the [Primary] will "flash" and be like this.

I have to run the code to clean it up:

This has been going on for as long as I remember ... I can't be the only one experiencing this ...

Another bummer: For some reason, often Thumbnail views save the [Primary] View Representation. Not always. If I immediately update something and save it, it will show a thumbnail of that View Representation. But if it's a subassembly of a subassembly it may very well save the thumbnail of the [Primary]. Very unhelpful!

Never experienced PVR lock as annoying "wall" for my workflows as many other IV "clever" solutions. 🙂
What is your workflow that it becomes so negative?

@AIR_123 I don't think we're talking about the same thing...

My issue is specifically with Assemblies not Parts. Assemblies that have both [Primary] and other View Reps and have components which are hidden in an unlocked view cannot have those same components hidden in [Primary] - obviously, since [Primary] is locked.

This can be very annoying, when for some reason or another [Primary] View is shown even though I specifically choose never to use [Primary] View Rep throughout Inventor for the reason that it's locked!

I hope the example above helps. The "cream colored" part is a Referenced part and hidden in all unlocked view reps. For whatever reason, quite often, [Primary] view will flash and stay that way until I refresh the view reps (with iLogic) or Rebuild all. My assembly should look like in the second image. The first image is what the [Primary] shows.

My primary issue is, that you can turn off visibility of work features in a part in the primary view (even though it is locked), but you cannot do the same thing in an assembly. There is absolutely not logic to that. Please enable that feature in assemblies also.

Exactly. There is no line in this.

Hi Folks,

I wish I had a better explanation for this inconsistency. Part Design View Rep (PDVR) was offered much later than Assembly Design View Rep (ADVR). To accommodate the existing parts (created before PDVR) with visibility overrides and reduce interruption to other workflows, the Primary PDVR carries a different definition. It is more like a base state DVR (a starting point). This means the modifiable Primary PDVR is the starting point. Any non-Primary PDVR adds the overrides to the base state.

For ADVR, the base state is no overrides (everything is visible without DVR modifiers). And any non-Primary ADVR adds the overrides to the base state.

Indeed, it is confusing and inconsistent.

Many thanks!

@johnsonshiue I would be very grateful if this could be fixed. Indeed, for me, it's pretty much a daily issue.

Maybe others use Inventor differently, but if you have Assemblies with parts that you wish hidden from view (like Referenced parts for example), they cannot be hidden in [Primary] and for whatever odd reason the [Primary] view "flashes" or thumbnails are written with ALL the parts - totally unnecesary behavior!

Thanks John,

Despite the designed intentions, it should be an easy "fix".

Have a Nice day!

99% of the time, you can use the Primary view for a part, since you are allowed to set the work features to invisible. I just imagined how it would be, if that was locked. All your parts would look like orange explosions and your assemblies would be horrible. I avoid using work features in Assemblies, due to the fact that you cannot turn them off in Primary. As a workaround, we have build a non-locked representation into our template, because people got the "the view representation is locked" message all the time and they did not take the time to understand why. It is still very annoying though, that you have to select the non-locked representation of assemblies, though, to avoid the mess of workfeatures.

I like, that the primary view shows all parts for assemblies, especially when working with other peoples stuff. You never know if they have hidden something inside a folder and flipping to primary is a easy way to gain an overview.

@PeterBrodt  100% agree with you. The problem is, even if you have other [Unlocked] View Reps, Inventor messes up and flashes the [Primary]. Then all those referenced components in those assemblies / subassemblies "pop up". Why? I don't know. Maybe Johnson can explain.

Then, view representations have to be refreshed. I do it with iLogic: For each viewrep activate "Default" .... which is an unlocked View Rep.

What's more, thumbnails are saved as [Primary] which makes it really unhandy to look for what you need if you use thumbnails to help looking for components.
